Translation and explanation of the Tantra 6

author:Son of the North and the South

Section VI

Zu knew that shenxiu had not yet obtained an entry, and did not see his own nature. At dawn, Zu summoned Lu to make offerings, painted pictures between the walls of the south corridor, and suddenly saw his eyes. The newspaper said: "The offerings do not need to be painted, and Raul is far away." Jing Yun: All phases are illusory. But leave it here, recite it to others, and practice it accordingly, so as not to fall into the path of evil. Practicing according to this has great benefits. "Let the disciples burn incense and pay homage, and recite this verse as much as they can, that is, to see sex." The doormen chanted, and they all sighed! Zu San summoned Xiu Xiu into the hall and asked, "Is it Ru Zuo?" Xiu Yan said: "It is really a show, do not dare to seek the ancestral throne, hope that the monk is merciful, and see if the disciple has less wisdom?" Zu Yue: "Ru did this, did not see his nature, only went outside the door, did not enter the door." Such an insight is to find the supreme bodhisattva, which is unattainable, and the supreme bodhisattva must be known from the original mind, from the nature, without birth and immortality, and in all times, the mind is self-seeing, and the ten thousand laws are not delayed; the truth is true, the whole world is as it is, and the mind is like the heart, that is, it is true. If this is seen, it is the self-nature of the supreme bodhisattva. Ru and go to meditate for a day or two, and do a more, and in the future I will see, if Ru Wei enters the door, pay Ru Yi Fa. "God came out in a show of courtesy, and after several days, he could not succeed, and his heart was in a trance, and his mind was restless, as if in a dream, and he could not sit happily.

(Translation: The Five Patriarchs already knew that Shenxiu had not yet entered the realm and had no self-evident Buddha-nature.) At dawn, the Five Patriarchs called Lu to make offerings, and went to the south corridor wall to paint an image, and suddenly saw that there was a slang on the wall. He said to Lu Offering, "The offering does not need to be painted, and trouble you will come from afar." The Scriptures say: All visible phenomena are illusory. But keeping this mantra for everyone to recite, according to this mantra practice, can avoid falling into the evil path. Practicing according to this mantra is of great benefit. "The Five Patriarchs asked their disciples to burn incense and pray, and they all came to recite this mantra in order to attain enlightenment of Buddha-nature. All the disciples chanted the words and sighed and said yes! At the third hour, the fifth patriarch called Shenxiu into the inner hall and asked him, "Did you make the 偈子?" ShenXiu replied, "It is true that I did it, but I am not delusional in my pursuit of the position of ancestor, I only hope that the monk will show mercy and see if I still have a little wisdom?" The Five Patriarchs said, "This verse you have made has not attained buddha-nature in nature, it is only outside the door, there is no entry." It is impossible to find the highest enlightenment and wisdom according to this view, the highest enlightenment is to know one's own original mind in the present moment between words, to discover one's own nature, to discover one's own nature, which is lifeless and immortal, and at all times manifests itself in every thought, and the ten thousand laws of the connotation of things can be understood and operated without any delay; a true understanding of a problem, everything that is seen and thought can be true, and all things have the sameness within themselves, and they have their identity, and they realize this in their hearts. The mind is also real. To attain this is to attain supreme wisdom. You go back and think about it for a day or two, make a new one, show it to me, and if you can get started with it, I'll pass on the mantle to you. After the god showed his gifts, he went back, and after a few days, he still could not make a word, and his mood was confused, and his mind was uneasy, as in a dream, and he was sullen and unhappy. )

[Explanation 1: After the Five Patriarchs saw Shenxiu's sayings, the thoughts in his heart and his external practices contradicted themselves, on the one hand, he saw that Shenxiu was not enlightened, and on the other hand, for reasons that could not be expressed, he asked a group of disciples to recite the practice, saying that by gaining inspiration from this saying, he would be able to avoid the fall of the Three Evil Paths.

The three evil paths are the path of hell, the way of hungry ghosts, and the way of beasts. All sentient beings are born with evil karma, and after death they are reincarnated. However, even if reading this verse can enable everyone to avoid falling into the Three Evil Paths after death, in fact, the Five Patriarchs took a big step back from the requirements of the disciples, and when the Five Patriarchs asked the disciples to be a disciple, they said: "The life and death of the world are great, and Ru waits all day long only to seek blessings, not to leave the sea of suffering of life and death." If you are confused, how can you save your blessings? "Now lower the requirements, don't let them pursue the sea of suffering from birth and death, as long as they avoid falling into the three evil paths." The former is to break through life and death, nirvana itself, and get rid of samsara; the latter is that since life and death cannot be renounced, then seek a good death and a good life, and in the cycle of samsara, we will not fall into the three evil paths. The encounters between the two are vastly different. But it was no wonder that the Fifth Patriarch, when he saw his most proud disciple Shen Xiu as a professor, that is, the person who preached on his behalf, was also confused and unenlightened, how could he expect that among these people there would be great wisdom and great power? So he adopted the rhetoric of appeasing Shenxiu and appeasing the monks. But when he talked to Shenxiu alone, he pointed out Shenxiu's problem: "Ru did this, did not see his nature, only went outside the door, did not enter the door." ”】

[Explanation 2: The Five Patriarchs had high expectations for Shenxiu, and after indicating that Shenxiu had not yet started, he explained in particular detail the way to get started: "The supreme bodhisattva must know from the original mind, see the nature, not be born and not perish, in all times, read and see the self, and there is no lag in the ten thousand laws; one is true and all is true, all the worlds are free, and if the heart is like this, it is true." If this is seen, it is the self-nature of the supreme bodhisattva. This passage can be summed up in three points: "First: consciousness comes out of the original mind; second: thinking of oneself, there is no lag in all laws; third: one truth is true, all things are as it is, and all things are as it is, and such as the heart is true." (The "truth" of "one truth" is not the truth or falsity of things, but whether the understanding of the world and life is correct.) The meaning of "such as" can be understood as the same, but it is not entirely correct, and it can be understood to be similar to the "identity" in philosophy. Sui Huiyuan Mahayana Yizhang, Volume III: "All dharma bodies are the same, so the name is ru... They are like each other, so they are like each other. ” )

Obviously, until this time, when he knew that Shenxiu had not yet realized the Dao, the Five Patriarchs still did not think of Huineng! Therefore, he was extremely careful and in place for Shen Xiu's pointing, but unfortunately, Shen Xiu did not understand it in the end. 】
