Surprise one: Never sunk
Back in 1995, in Oxford, England, a researcher called Robin Gardiner said that the Titanic never sank.
This sentence is really groundbreaking, if it has not sunk, then what is the wreckage that experts found on the bottom of the North Atlantic?
If it hadn't sunk, where were the more than 1,500 passengers killed on board?
Robin took his new book and calmly introduced such a surprising theory...
The first thing to understand, he said, was that there were two shipping companies at the time, called White Star Line and Cunard Line.
Both were British companies, and in the 1900s, when competition was at a premium, White Star chose to join the IMM Group to obtain financial support, while Cunard chose product development, and in 1906, launched two of the largest and fastest cruise ships in the North Atlantic, the Lusitania and Mauretania.
White Star lost the round of the battle, but they soon developed a plan for counterattacking the rich and powerful - that is, building ships and building large ships.
They decided to build three more top-of-the-line cruise ships that were faster, bigger and more luxurious than Cunard's: the Olympic, the Titanic and the Britannic.
The three ships share the same blueprints, taking the Titanic as an example, which has 11 decks, a total length of 269 meters, a width of 28.3 meters, and a height of 53.3 meters, and its section view appeared in newspapers at the time, comparing it to skyscrapers and traditional sail passenger ships, which is simply a maritime city.

In this way, as soon as the White Star project was issued, the whole society began to pay close attention, huge cruise ships began to be built in the dockyard in Northern Ireland, and in 1910, the first Olympic was launched, and the second Titanic had also entered the stage of completion and decoration.

Immediately afterwards, Robin said that he found a survivor record at the time, a second-class passenger named Lawrence Beesley, who said in his memoirs that the ship sailed very smoothly, and from the hanging window on the right side of the ship, you could only see the sea, and from the left hanging window, you could only see the sea, only the sky.
What does that mean?
Then, Robin took out 46 rivet samples, he said, these are salvaged Titanic wreckage, according to the standard, it should be No. 4 quality steel nails, but why are there many No. 3 quality steel nails, and even many iron nails? And further analysis, in the microstructure of these iron rivets, why does there be a honeycomb glass structure?
Robin believes that this is likely to imply that the Titanic itself has quality problems, not only the artificial cutting of corners during construction, but also structural problems on the keel of the hull - as described by survivors - the view from the left and right hanging windows is different, which is caused by the tilt of the hull, which may be related to the imbalance of the keel structure of the hull.
However, why did the White Star Company at that time, want money and money, want people, but also cut corners when building the Titanic, and even structural quality problems?
There was only one reason, Robin continued, he said, that the problem was a first-class passenger who suddenly canceled his trip.
The passenger's name was J.P. Morgan. P. Morgan）。
That is, the founder of JPMorgan Chase today, a financial magnate, and at that time, he was the founder of the parent company of White Star Line, IMM Group.
Could it be that he canceled his trip the day before the Titanic set sail because he already knew the ship would sink?
Robin continued to analyze that the story at that time may have gone something like this - the problem was not with the Titanic, but with the first launched Olympic ship.
White Star Company is ambitious, in May 1911, the Olympic is in service, but the division is unfavorable, just the third voyage, in the dock of New York, accidentally collided with the tugboat, causing hull damage, had to return to the UK empty, for repairs, the most important thing is that the Olympic is fully responsible, the insurance company is not accompanied.
More than a month later, the Olympic was repaired and sailed again to the United States, but only once again safely sailed, and on the fifth voyage, just after leaving England, collided with a British warship (Hawke) outside the pier, this time the collision was not serious, the warship's hull was crashed, and a large hole was knocked out of the side of the Olympic ship.
At this time, it had to stop back to the dock and continue to repair, and the insurance company still did not pay for it, because it was still the full responsibility of the Olympic.
The Olympic was counterfeited by $7 million, equivalent to $370 million today.
It is expected that 100 round-trip routes will be needed to pay for itself, but now that even 4 round-trips are not completed, it will have to be overhauled twice in the dock, who can stand this?
What is even more unacceptable is that at the same time, there is a Titanic planned to invest $7.5 million in the dock, which burns more fiercely than a forest fire, and the Olympic cannot sail, which means that the White Star Company does not have any cash flow into the account, so the researcher Robin suspects that by 1912, the White Star Company has inevitably broken the red line of financial bankruptcy.
So, most likely, J.P. Morgan, who did not get on board, planned a brilliant plan for White Star behind the scenes.
How cruel is this trick?
Speaking of which, Robin himself has repeatedly emphasized that conjecture is just conjecture, conjecture is only.
But in fact, Robin's conjecture is really not unfounded, because, just before the Titanic set sail, it and the Olympic were parked side by side in the dock for 44 days, leaving photos.

That is, use these 44 days to drop the Titanic and the Olympic.
Let the Olympics, which has been crashed, pose as the Titanic, and the Titanic must have no return, and must sink to the bottom of the North Atlantic Ocean at a depth of more than 3800 meters...
Because Morgan wants to use it to cheat insurance, to let insurance companies erase their financial losses.
As for the more than 2000 passengers on board?
J.P. Morgan also had a clever plan, that is, to send another California from the White Star Company to follow all the way and prepare for the rescue, and probably only in this way can he completely convince the captain and overseer who specifically executed the wreck figure, otherwise it would be too cruel.
Later, the cargo list on the California also proved this conjecture, and its cargo, in addition to a large amount of cotton wool, even prepared more than 3,500 blankets, just like a lifeboat.
But we all know the final ending of the story, in the process of sinking the Titanic, the California watched it sink just 37 kilometers away, the radio would not be a single word, and even the signal flares for help were chosen to be ignored by the captain, and the deeper conspiracy behind this was really unthinkable.
But all the logical assumptions work here, why did the Titanic cut corners and have a bad keel? That's because it's the Olympic, a sacrificial ship that was already wrecked and knew it was going to be taken to defraud the bail.

Although the researcher Robin did not say it explicitly, he couldn't help but make people guess, see who was killed in the shipwreck, right?

So, is Robin's theory of such an amazing shipwreck supported by tangible evidence?

Because, most likely, in order to rush work and cheat insurance, the number 401 was not printed on the soft decoration materials of the Titanic at all, and the passengers at that time were riding the 400 with the mark erased - the Olympic number.
In addition, Robin provides a set of comparative photos in the book, above which are photos taken by someone during the construction of the Titanic, and 14 neatly hung windows in the bow.
And when it was time to sail, someone took another photo, and the hanging windows became 16 untidy, and in fact the untidy 16 hanging windows, which is exactly the design of the Olympic.
There are also photos of the remains taken underwater, and the bow of the wrecked ship is completely different from the bow style and distance in the construction photo.
Although Robin's conjecture immediately caused a big storm after it was published in 1995, even Robin himself used the deadliest evidence at the end of the book to deny his conjecture, that is, photos taken at the bottom of the sea, the number 401 appeared on the shipwreck propeller, which is indeed the Titanic.
However, the voice of doubt has not stopped, and later, another researcher named Andrew Newton (Andrew Newton) made a documentary, at the end of the documentary, Andrew gave a more shocking evidence - the underwater robot clearly photographed the letters M and P from the wreckage, which is obviously the remains of OLYMPIC...
Unfortunately, experts will never be prepared to salvage the shipwrecks on the seabed, and due to bacterial erosion, experts expect them to disappear without a trace by 2037 at the latest. Therefore, although Robin's conjecture is unanimously denied by mainstream scholars, it will also become an eternal mystery.
Surprise Two: Why not rescue?
When the Titanic sank, the California was only 37 kilometers away, why didn't it rush to the rescue?
In addition to Robin's theory, in fact, under the logic of mainstream research, this story may be like this...
Fast forward to April 12, 1912, the day after the Titanic departed, and it received its first iceberg warning.
At that time, the ship was equipped with a radio room, belonging to the Marconi's Wireless Telegraph Company, which had only just entered commercial use in the 1910s, so this telegraph room was very high-class and did not belong to the captain's command, it was equivalent to a sales office opened by Marconi on the Titanic, and the captain was also a customer.
There were two salesmen in the telegraph room, J.G. Phillips and H.S. Bride, who in addition to helping the captain send telegrams, they also received telegram sending and receiving services from various passengers in order to earn bonuses.
Therefore, they are very busy, the kind of 24-hour double shift, the bed is placed in the telegraph room, usually when they wake up, they have to work.
In this way, on April 12, the captain received an iceberg warning, and he predicted that this year's iceberg would drift further south than in previous years, so the captain changed the course of the Titanic twice in succession, making the ship farther south to avoid the iceberg.
However, the captain did not reduce his speed and still flew to the United States at a speed of 21.5 knots, equivalent to 40 kilometers per hour.
Two days later, on April 14, seven iceberg warnings came from the telegraph room, all from nearby ships, and it was logical that the captain should continue to avoid the south, and at the same time, must reduce the speed of the ship.
But in fact, the captain chose to ignore these iceberg warnings and went straight to the United States.
Why is this?
In Robin's theory of conjecture, this is evidence that the captain carried out the wreck plan.
But in fact, at a later accident hearing, there was an important survivor named J. Ismay. Bruce Ismay), then chairman of White Star, whose testimony was key.
This bridge is also played in the movie "Titanic", that is, someone heard Ismay say to the captain that this is the maiden voyage of the Titanic, speed, need speed, must break the speed between Cunard and the United Kingdom, so that whether it is luxury, comfort or speed, White Star can crush Cunard.
Remember White Star's financial crisis at this time?
The first ship, the Olympic has been out of the division, if the second ship, the Titanic cannot directly defeat the crown, then White Star is afraid that it is really difficult to turn over.
Therefore, the captain will accept Ismay's advice, ignore safety, and speed up.
Moreover, everyone was also blinded by propaganda at that time - didn't the Titanic claim to be unsinkable?
In this way, on the night of the 14th, the moon was dark and the wind was high and the visibility was very low, and there was a watchtower on board, and the sailors in the watchtower could not see anything ...
At the same time, in the telegraph room, iceberg warning telegrams were still coming in one after another.
The two telegraphers were already very tired, and they sent iceberg warnings to the captain one after another, plus the captain didn't pay attention to it at all, and they were a little bored, because, the evening peak, this is also the peak of passengers receiving telegrams, don't send any iceberg warnings to the ships near you, we are also busy helping passengers collect telegrams to earn bonuses, sending and receiving your telegrams, tired and anxious and not profitable.
So, the telegraph operator Philip was anxious, and directly opened the telegram, and kept issuing the California horn of warning, saying, go away, shut up, I am busy with the business of Cape Reisse (Keep out; shut up, I'm working Cape Race）。
Cape Reis was supposed to be a passenger on board, and Philip was busy with his business.
The incident of receiving this telegram was already 10:55 p.m., very late, the telegrapher of the California was also very hot, simply turned off the machine and went to bed, and at this time, the captain of the California ordered to stop sailing, because they seemed to have been surrounded by icebergs, and the Titanic, who was rushing towards the California at this time, did not know all this.
At 11:39 p.m., the sailor injured in the watchtower suddenly saw clearly, visible to the naked eye, there was a huge iceberg in front, he quickly rattled three times in a row, the people below received the alarm, immediately picked up the phone and called the commander on the bridge, the chief officer on duty was the first mate, and the first mate also panicked and quickly ordered the left full rudder.
For the next minute, the sailors in the watchtower watched as huge icebergs, as tall as themselves, crashed towards them little by little, and in the prayers and chatter of the sailors, the icebergs passed them at the last moment.
Thankfully, it was 11:40 a.m., and the sailors dodged the iceberg on their own, but for the next 10 seconds they felt a faint vibration and a dull sound of the iceberg rubbing against the hull.
Then, the iceberg was quickly thrown behind by the giant ship, and it was okay, maybe everyone thought so at the time.
Isn't Titanic unsinkable?
Just now did not directly hit the iceberg, but in fact, if it really hit straight up, it is really fine, because the last iceberg collision occurred 33 years ago, when the Arizona encountered almost the exact same situation as the Titanic, but its bridge chief ordered at the first moment to hit at full speed, as a result, we saw such a picture, although the bow was almost knocked out, but the Arizona did not sink, it returned safely to its home port.
In fact, when designing ships, engineers have long considered this sudden collision situation, all ships, the bow has an anti-collision compartment, the Titanic is no exception, if it is directly loaded, it is just a problem of one or two compartments entering the water.
Remember the safety factor mentioned at the beginning? The flooding of one compartment does not affect navigation, and the water ingress of three compartments will not be powered off, even if it is filled with a full four compartments, the giant ship can remain afloat and wait for rescue.
However, this avoidance of the iceberg allowed the iceberg to squeeze out a long crack in the hull, just as long as five compartments...
Therefore, after the Titanic flew at high speed for another 20 minutes, the captain, designer and a group of executives gathered, the captain ordered to stop the ship quickly, and the designer said in a panic that there was no rescue, five compartments were broken, and the sea water was pouring in at a speed of 400 tons per minute, which had been poured for 20 minutes, and it was expected to sink completely in 2 hours.
The captain was experienced and did not rush to the telegraph room as soon as possible, calmly said, CQD, latitude 41.46 north, longitude 50.14 west.
The two telegraphers immediately dropped all the passengers' telegrams and began desperately asking for help.
One minute passed, two minutes passed, and no one from the nearby ship replied, at this time, the telegraph operator Philip suddenly remembered that the International Telegraph Organization had just released a new distress code a few days ago, why not try again?
So, the first SOS in history was sent by the Titanic, and after another two minutes, the surrounding ships responded one after another, the nearest Carpathian was 107 kilometers away, and it took 3.5 hours to rush over, and the time left for the Titanic was only two hours.
When the captain heard the news, he was not calm, he knew what it meant, but at this moment, the telegraph operator suddenly said that there should be a California nearby, but they never replied.
Continuing to issue, the captain only had this last straw, and at the same time, the captain ordered to abandon ship.
In fact, at this time, no one knew that the California was moored 37 kilometers away, and the telegraph operator turned off the telegraph because he was frightened, and was sleeping soundly, until he restarted the machine the next morning, and saw CQD and SOS like snowflakes...
What is even more exaggerated is that when the Titanic was in a mess and the crew continued to fire signal flares for help, the lookout of the California actually saw it, but when he reported to the captain, the captain came to watch and thought that the height was too low, which is probably the Titanic is engaged in a fireworks party, everyone dispersed.
Later scientists showed that this may be because of the mirage phenomenon in the sea at that time, because of the ice floes and the temperature, the light refracted, so that the signal flares that originally flew to the sky looked very low, like fireworks...
In this way, the California missed the rescue, which could have saved everyone.
Marvel Three: Curse or Coincidence?
In addition to a series of coincidences that happened to the California, there are also some curse-like coincidences on the Titanic's side.
For example, at a later hearing, the surviving lookout broke the news, he said that they did not have a telescope that night, if there were telescopes, the lookout admitted that he could find the iceberg at least a minute earlier, and this minute was enough to save everyone, but when the court advanced to investigate, why they did not have a telescope that night, the reason was that people wanted to crush their fists, it turned out that the captain adjusted the candidates for the first mate, second officer, and three pictures 1 day before setting sail, and transferred the first mate of the Olympic ship. became the first mate of Titanic, and Titanic's original first mate became a second mate, the second mate became a third mate, and the third Blair lost his post and was asked to disembark to rest.

Another coincidence, when the captain gave the order to abandon the ship and the crew began to organize passengers to board the lifeboat, the two adjutants in charge of the port work came to the captain separately, and the captain had a nervous breakdown, and he said expressionlessly, yes, yes, women and children first, yes, yes, just do that.
But this sentence is ambiguous, the port side adjutant understands that only women and children can board the ship, while the starboard adjutant understands that others can board the ship after women and children are on board.
So that when the first lifeboat No. 7 on the starboard side was lowered, only 28 people were sitting on it, while it could have carried 65 people, squeezed and carried at least 70 people ...
In this way, a total of 16 lifeboats on board, fully loaded with 990 people, only 633 people boarded.
The second coincidence about lifeboats is that there was originally a full-crew lifeboat exercise during the day on the 14th, but I don't know why the captain temporarily canceled it 5 minutes before the exercise, and on the night of the 14th, the passengers and crew who lacked the exercise were also chaotic on the deck, panicking to survive.
The third coincidence, that is, the chairman of the White Star Company, Ismay, before he launched, he told the ship designer that in order to make the deck look wider, remove all these and these lifeboats, and the Titanic will never sink.
A total of 24 lifeboats that he threw on the table at that time, which happened to carry 1560 people, and the number of victims was 1514...
In addition, the fourth chimney of the Titanic is actually a decoration, and Ismay removed the space of 24 lifeboats for the sake of beauty, helping it install a fourth chimney...
In this way, in the chaotic lifeboat scene, there are actually many touching stories happening, such as the band that has been playing bravely, and the old couple who died in a hug, they are all real characters, and this old couple is also considered to be the original form of Jack and Ruth in the movie.
Surprise Four: Mr. and Mrs. Messi
If you're a fan of shopping, you'll have the impression of Macy's, once the world's largest department store chain, and its founders are the old couple in the movie who hugged each other to death, the Isidor Straus.
They have been married for 40 years, and in the past 40 years, they have worked hard in the United States, from unknown small traders to the richest people in the United States at that time.
The couple wanted to spend their old age in peace, so they came to Europe from the United States last winter for a vacation, originally planning to return to the United States in the spring on the Olympic, but due to another strike caused by an accident, the trip had to be postponed, and the White Star Company also changed their tickets to the Titanic.

At that time, there were still many empty seats on the No. 8 ship, and the passengers also said that they did not mind the old husband accompanying his wife on board, but the husband still shook his head firmly, and suddenly, the old woman jumped back to the deck, stood shoulder to shoulder with her husband, and gave her fur coat to the maid beside her, let the maid board the boat, and gave her place to the maid.
In this way, the maid survived, and the last time the old couple was seen, they stood on the deck holding hands and smiling.
Later, although the husband's body was received, the whereabouts of the wife are still unknown.
The children buried the couple, and on their epitaphs it was written, "The water of love is not extinguished, the water is not gone, this is a sentence in the Old Testament, but some people also translate it colloquially as "No amount of water can extinguish love and drown love."

After the strong emotional rendering, we can find out coldly from the historical data that the No. 8 lifeboat, obviously can seat 65 people, but only 28 people sat at that time.
Surprise Five: The real murderer who sank
Excessively fast ship speeds, closed telegraphs, poorly prepared lifeboats, binoculars locked in cabinets.
These are just coincidences that contributed to the tragedy, but what exactly caused the sinking of the Titanic?
In 2009, Hopkins' team at Dr. Hu (Hooper McCarty) finally came up with a solid answer.
But no one expected that it was the same as Robin's conjecture 14 years ago - the real murderer is rivets, remember the 46 rivets that were salvaged from the water?
The No. 4 steel that should have been used became No. 3 steel, and even the No. 3 steel was mixed with a large number of inferior iron nails.
Therefore, Dr. Hu also believes that the real culprit of sinking the Titanic is these rivets, which is the quality of the hull, but unlike Robin's conjecture, Robin guesses that someone is deliberately cutting corners, while Dr. Hu gives a more rational explanation.
First, her team copied these steel nails and iron nails, and then used a hydraulic press to simulate the steel plate of the Titanic, and did the extrusion test over and over again.
Dr. Hu then came to the following conclusions:
1, Why replace No. 4 steel with No. 3 steel?
Because, through tests, it was found that the compressive strength of No. 4 steel and No. 3 steel is almost the same, however, No. 3 steel is more convenient when installing, at that time, in order to catch up with the construction speed, Titanic used No. 3 steel nails is absolutely in line with technical standards.
However, the problem came, when Dr. Hu froze No. 4 steel and No. 3 steel, reduced to the temperature environment at that time, the situation was different, obviously, No. 3 steel is easier to break, these rivets are broken, resulting in a gap in the steel plate connection, which is the real culprit of the sinking of the Titanic, not as we think, it is the iceberg that broke the steel plate of the hull.
Dr. Hu said that if the whole ship used No. 4 steel, then the speed of Titanic would not sink so fast, which should buy more time for later rescue.
2, why are there inferior iron nails?
After research, it was found that the impurities in these iron nails were not inferior, but deliberately added toner.
It turned out that the hydraulic technology at that time was limited, and the steel nails on the large plane of the rivet were that the hydraulic press could be used, but here in the bow, when the rivet surface was uneven, the hydraulic press could not be used, and it could only be manually nailed.
In this way, whether it is No. 3 steel or No. 4 steel, the strength is too large, and workers can not actually install these two quality steel nails by hand, only relatively soft iron nails.
However, the compressive strength of the iron nails is not enough, what to do?
Therefore, according to experience, add toner to these iron nails, which can actually enhance the strength of the iron nails.
However, the low temperature factor ignored by the technical workers at that time, and these iron nails added to toner became easier to break at low temperatures.
So that the opening in the hull becomes larger and sinks faster ...
In 2009, another international ice patrol oceanographer, Don Murphy, said the second real culprit was the unusual weather of 1912.
This year, the moon's perigee from the sun was the closest in 1400 years, a rare celestial phenomenon that caused the gravitational pull of ocean tides to increase by 74% than usual, plus just a few days before the sinking of the Titanic, the earth turned to the high point of the sun's gravity, so that the Titanic actually happened to meet the tide that has not been encountered in a thousand years.
Originally, icebergs from the north to the south would run aground in the large shoals near the Labrador Sea, and the captain's experience is correct, he has twice adjusted his course to the south, and this southern route is absolutely safe according to experience.
However, the captain did not know that the earth had a once-in-a-millennium tide, and the tide caused these huge icebergs to rush over the Great Shoal and float straight to the south.
