First of all, thank you for your contributions to Huawei. We are still in difficult times, but we have not stopped on the road ahead. When I was young, I admired the West, because Western technology was so advanced, and in our time, books were very precious, it was difficult to see a good book, I wanted to read but couldn't buy it. After founding Huawei, I was also pro-Western, when we came up with the slogan "To make the world's best products with the world's best parts and tools", and we achieved it. Then suddenly under sanctions, others could not provide us with parts, tools..., we were stupid. Many of the best parts in the world come from the United States, and in fact I am pro-American. When the United States hit us with a stick and severely sanctioned us, Xu Zhijun said to me at an office meeting: "The United States did not understand that their baton turned the most pro-American person into the most anti-American person." Of course, I am not anti-American now, if we want to be the most advanced, we must learn from all advanced people. The soft power of the United States in science and education is still something that we cannot achieve in a few decades. Fortunately, we have spent nearly 20 years making preparations in basic theory and invested hundreds of billions to train a group of scientists and experts with technical know-how who study basic theory. They have been climbing the scientific "Himalayas". When we are suppressed, we invite these scientists to the "foot of the mountain" to "herd sheep", "farm"... and take a "scalpel" to participate in the battle of "killing pigs". Question: Our school wants to build a future technology college, and we thought when we designed that if we can understand some of the future needs of innovative companies like Huawei, and give students more guidance and space for development through school-enterprise cooperation, we will be able to promote the cultivation of future technical talents. This is our own idea as an education community, I wonder if Huawei also has corresponding ideas and specific measures to cooperate with universities in terms of future technical talents?

Ren: This may involve the institutional design of the state. I believe that science and technology are two different concepts, science is discovery and technology is invention. Vannevar Bush has a book "Science: Endless Frontiers" that writes very well, science is endless frontiers, and the unknown is called science. From this point of view, education and science are the same, education does not necessarily have to have accurate answers, and accurate answers are not necessarily the needs of schools.

A kid with a Ph.D. at MIT told me they didn't have handouts or textbooks; The teacher comes up to talk about it, writes it on the blackboard, and designates a batch of reference materials; Several professors criticize each other during lectures, each with their own point of view, and each recommends some reference books to guide you to read; And then you write, you don't need results to write articles, as long as the logic of thinking is appropriate, the teacher marks you, this is science. The needs of enterprises are realistic because we have to solve real problems, but education should not focus on real needs, but be oriented to the future.

Question: I just joined the school as an assistant professor this year, and my research direction is related to ChatGPT. In foreign countries, these studies are done by relatively young people, but in China, many resources are basically in the hands of relatively high-level professors or engineers, such as machines and students, but their understanding and follow-up of new technologies may not be enough. Young people have great ideas, but without machines, they can't recruit better students. People who have the ability do not have resources, and those who have resources do not have the ability, in the face of such a situation, what advice and guidance does Mr. Ren have?

Ren: I know that the EDA of Hong Kong Chinese University is doing very well, and other fields should be very good; City University of Hong Kong teaches semiconductor technology very well; HKU's theory is good; ......

First, the categories of scientists can be different, some are architecture scientists, some are explanatory scientists, some are breakthrough scientists, and some are craftsman scientists.... Older scientists, they have rich life experience and a clear understanding of system architecture; They explain the architecture model to young people, and young people are easy to break through if they have whimsy, and the defects in this architecture are easy to be repaired; Some people who are deeply hands-on, have accumulated a wealth of know-how experience in engineering implementation, and are good at solving complex engineering problems, we also call them artisan scientists. The most creative are young people, but the most architectural ability are experienced old experts and professors, who have a clear understanding of the entire architecture. Therefore, it is necessary to combine the old, middle-aged and young people so that the country can overcome major difficulties.

I think that the School of Surveying and Mapping of Wuhan University has done a very good job, and five academicians give lectures to first-year students, which is the most correct. Ren Zhengfei: First, when entering our company, the title of "genius boy" is gone, and positioning "genius teenager" is mainly used for grading and salary for entry. Ren Zhengfei: Our company has a project that hopes to achieve tens of millions of servers and one operating system, all young people, I will let them "talk nonsense", anyway, we can't do tens of millions now. Now it can be hundreds of thousands of operating systems.

Our company's algorithm is an algorithm to solve the computing power, and the energy is mainly focused on how to use the algorithm to reduce the consumption problem in the process of large traffic, and only do the "black soil" basic platform. In principle, we do not do algorithms that solve customer applications, and the algorithm part that serves the business can only be understood by customers. The data belongs to others, and we can borrow it at most.

We may also learn from Google in the future and do some research that has no practical meaning, not necessarily related to Huawei's business, in fact, it is to make more contributions to human society. Of course, we don't have that much money now, and when the net profit is enough, our scientific frontier will go one step further, from the spark to the universe.

Question: In some applied mathematics fields, from Huawei's perspective, what problems can we do medium- or long-term planning?

Ren Zhengfei: I think that the combination of mathematics and industry should be the task of some specific applied research institutes. For example, Zhenjiang Agricultural Machinery College of Jiangsu University and Zhengzhou cooperated to make a hydraulic tractor, why can't the college have its own characteristics, isn't it a famous school in some aspects? Ren Zhengfei: The research of universities is not directly related to the research and development of our company, because universities should undertake the tasks of universities, which is a very broad concept.
