LaVine and the Bulls were unable to reach an agreement on a contract extension in the offseason. While Bulls fans may be a little disappointed, it's an expected development. Considering that Lavin is likely to get a super-maximum contract worth more than $235 million in 5 years, his contract will cost himself a year, close to $130 million. Chicago could have freed up enough salary space to offer LaVine a five-year, $195 million contract extension, but that wouldn't have allowed them to get players like Lonzo Ball, DeMar DeRozan and Alex Caruso.
Following the bulls and LaVine's approach, the team will get better in the coming years, and the player, assuming he continues his current trajectory after his 2020-21 career, will maximize his earning potential. Maybe that's why when I asked him about the percentage chances Lavin would stay on the list at the end of the upcoming season, Devini said so.
"I have to say it's about 90 percent," Deveney said. "It's really hard for me to imagine everything that happened to Zach [leaving]. You know you'll go back to when he was first traded to Chicago; the teams he was traded to were gone; Denzel Valentine and Lauri Markkanen were the last two players left on that team zach was traded to. You've seen three managers, a change in the front office, basically a full roster turnover. ”
"He kept saying he wanted to be here; he wanted to be the guy they were around. As far as the playoffs are concerned, he wants to break his own personal wilderness. In Chicago, he wanted to be the one who set the trend. He can certainly do that in this team, so yeah, I'd be really surprised if he went through [after he left]. He's still young, but he's been through a lot in his career. I would be shocked if he turned around and hit the free agent mark. Another thing to consider, Brian, is: Who's going to sign him? There won't be a lot of free agent salary space next year. So if you see Zach playing anywhere outside of Chicago after next season, I'd be really surprised. ”

Some believe there is more room for manoeuvre, but it's no secret that the Bulls are putting a lot of money into the upcoming season. The free agent money spent to keep Ball, DeRozan and Alex Caruso was considerable.
The money the team seems ready to pay LaVine will be the greatest contract in the team's history. Whatever you think about it, the Bulls are pinning their hopes on LaVine and the other New Big Four to provide playoff appearances and title battles over the next three years.
