introduction
Wu Zetian is the only female emperor in Chinese history, and she ruled the late Tang Dynasty, having a profound impact on Chinese history.
However, Wu Zetian's place in history has been debated in academic circles, with some considering her an excellent leader and ruler, while others consider her a tyrant and trespasser.
Therefore, the purpose of this thesis is to evaluate Wu Zetian's historical status by analyzing her position in history, whether she was a leader, ruler or tyrant, as well as her political methods, achievements, controversies, and criticisms.
The research methods adopted in this paper mainly include the documentary method and the historical analysis method.
Through the research and analysis of a large number of relevant historical documents, including historical books, poems, inscriptions, anthologies, etc., combined with historical events and background, Wu Zetian's political career is deeply analyzed from multiple angles, providing sufficient evidence and support for the conclusions of the paper.
The structure of this article mainly includes seven parts, namely, introduction, Wu Zetian's life and background, Wu Zetian's ruling methods, Wu Zetian's political achievements, Wu Zetian's controversy and criticism, and Wu Zetian's position and conclusion in history.
In each section, relevant issues and themes will be explored separately to provide adequate arguments and analysis for the final conclusion.
1. Wu Zetian's life and background
Wu Zetian (624–705), the second female emperor of the Tang Dynasty, was the only female emperor in Chinese history. Her name is significant in Chinese history and is one of the few women in Chinese history who is widely remembered.
Wu Zetian was born in 624, and her place of birth and family background are not clearly recorded.
However, according to historical documents and history books, Wu Zetian's father was a samurai and his mother was an ordinary woman, and the family was not wealthy. Wu Zetian's mother died early, and Wu Zetian was raised by his father and grandmother from an early age and received some basic education.
Wu Zetian showed extraordinary talent and wisdom at a young age. She specializes in literature, music, dance and other art forms, and is proficient in politics, military, diplomacy and other fields.
According to historical records, the then emperor Taizong saw her talent and appointed her as his concubine. After becoming a concubine, Wu Zetian showed outstanding talent and ability in the court, and gradually won the trust and favor of Emperor Taizong.

Wu Zetian used a variety of tactics during his political career to consolidate his power. First, she expanded her sphere of influence by establishing close relationships with eunuchs, royalty, and courtiers.
Second, she resorted to brutal measures to eliminate dissidents, killing a group of opponents, including high-ranking officials of the Tang Dynasty, eunuchs, and princes.
In addition, she has adopted a number of political measures to stabilize the country, such as strengthening local administration, developing agriculture and commerce, and strengthening the army.

4. Wu Zetian's controversy and criticism

First, after the death of Emperor Gaozong of Tang, she seized the supreme power of the Tang Dynasty through her own power and means.

VI. Conclusion
In general, Wu Zetian is a highly controversial historical figure.
From the perspective of a leader and ruler, Wu Zetian was a brave, wise and successful ruler who successfully seized the supreme power of the Tang Dynasty, stabilized the situation in the country and society, and promoted political, military, economic and cultural development.
From another perspective, Wu Zetian's rule has also received some criticism and questioning, and her ruling methods and political tactics are regarded as brutal, powerful and tyrannical acts, especially after her suppression and execution of the opposition after the Anshi Rebellion was quelled and controversial.
As the only female emperor in Chinese history, Wu Zetian also has a special status and significance.
She successfully held supreme power in a patriarchal society and promoted the status and power of women in court politics, literature and the arts, and the selection of officials.
To sum up, Wu Zetian is an important figure in Chinese history, and her rule, political means and historical status have been evaluated and interpreted differently.
