The Republic of Fiji; Fijian: Matanitu Tugalala o Viti), abbreviated Fiji, is located in the center of the southwest Pacific Ocean and consists of 332 islands, 106 of which are inhabited.

Most of the volcanic islands surrounded by coral reefs are Viti Island and Vanua Island.

With a land area of 18,333 square kilometers and an exclusive maritime economic zone of 1.29 million square kilometers, it has a tropical maritime climate

, often hit by hurricanes.

The name of the country is derived from the Tongan word for "island" and changed to "Viti" in Fijian.

It was inhabited in 1500 BC.

In 1643, the Dutch navigator Abel Jansson Tasman first came to Fiji.

Europeans began to move in in the 19th century.

It became a British colony in 1874.

In 1879~1916, Britain recruited a large number of Indian laborers to settle in Fiji.

It became independent on 10 October 1970 and is a member of the Commonwealth.

In 1987, it was renamed a republic and seceded from the Commonwealth.

In 1990, a new constitution was adopted to establish the name of the country as the Sovereign Democratic Republic of Fiji.

Rejoined the Commonwealth in 1997.

In 1998, the country was renamed the Republic of the Fiji Islands.

In 2009, the name of the country was changed to the Republic of Fiji.
