On March 2, local time, the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture reported that there was a case of mad cow disease in northern Brazil and is still waiting for the results of the investigation. Thailand, Iran and Jordan have suspended imports of beef from Brazil.

On 20 February, Brazil's Ministry of Agriculture received a report from the Department of Agriculture and Livestock in Pará State in the north of the country of a suspected case of mad cow disease on a pasture in the state, and an investigation confirmed that a 9-year-old male animal on the farm was suffering from mad cow disease, the affected livestock had been culled, and the farm in isolation and monitoring and preventive measures had been taken.

The Palá state government subsequently issued a communiqué saying that in terms of symptoms, the detected cases should be "atypical mad cow disease, which occurs spontaneously in nature". Further testing is still being done by the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture to confirm whether the case in Pará is "atypical" or "typical" mad cow disease.

At present, Thailand, Iran and Jordan have suspended the import of Brazilian beef. At the same time, Russia has announced a moratorium on imports of beef products produced in the Pala region.

It is understood that mad cow disease, also known as "bovine spongiform encephalopathy", is a disease that harms the central nervous system of cattle, divided into two categories: "typical" and "atypical". In the 80s of the 20th century, the United Kingdom reported the world's first "typical" case of mad cow disease, the main source of infection is prion contaminated feed, human consumption of sick beef may contract the deadly Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. "Atypical" mad cow disease is different, which is less common and spontaneous. The last confirmed case of BSE in Brazil was in September 2021.
