According to the latest data released by the Council International Airports (ACI), global passenger traffic recovered to 72% of 2019 levels in 2022. International air passenger traffic reached 60% of 2019; Domestic travel recovered faster, recovering to 79% of 2019 levels.

With travel restrictions and quarantine requirements easing and tourist travel demand surging, ACI World predicts that global passenger traffic will reach 8.4 billion in 2023, recovering to 92% of 2019 levels, driven by domestic travel, and fully recovering in 2024. Global passenger traffic will reach 19.3 billion passengers in 2041, with the United States, China and India leading the way, accounting for more than 40% of the world's total passengers.

DFE Watch: Based on a short-term surge in demand, a sustained recovery is expected in 2023. With the resumption of international flights and group travel, outbound travel from China will recover rapidly in 2023 and is expected to return to pre-pandemic levels this summer.
