Good news for movie fans again – the Shenzhen Broadway Film Center is about to open a retrospective exhibition of Varda and Demy. Varda's films are full of struggle and love for life, Demy's colorful song and dance films are gorgeous but also soft, and their love and life together deserve to be understood by more people. The theme of this film festival is "Happy Beach Film Life", which is a tribute to "love".
The first thing to tell you is that the two major film festival theme exhibitions of "Varda and Demi's Happy Courtyard" and "BC+ Beach from 6 to 8 o'clock" will be launched on June 19 (today) as scheduled to meet with fans. "Varda and Demy's Happy Courtyard"

In 1951, Agnès Varda met an alley in Paris. Located between the old grocery store and the frame factory, it had no bathroom, no heating, and was dilapidated, and Varda had the idea of rebuilding it.
After his father's death, Varda moved into this alleyway and little by little transformed it into his own backyard. The courtyard after the set is charming, and it has provided a related shot of a street in his debut film "The Short Horn", where Varda also wrote lines for the couple in the film.
At different stages, Varda put the yard in a different shape. Alexander Calder, Hans Hartung, Mario Prassinos, Brassaï (Gyula Halász), these artists liked to visit the yard; Varda often took pictures of the neighborhood and then exhibited them in the yard.
In 1959, Jacques Demy also moved in to live with Varda, raising two children together, Mathieu and Rosalie, and the courtyard became a harbor for the family. At that time, Varda went out from home with wires to shoot movies, she pulled the lines to shoot neighbors, cafe owners, bakery cooks, accordion dealers, watch sellers... The length of the wire is 90 meters, which was once the limit distance for Varda to leave the small courtyard to work.
Some people say that this wire is the umbilical cord that connects Varda to the courtyard. When the work was over, Varda put away the lights, left the wires in the slots, and went home.
"4 Chevaux" car
Varda has a "4 Chevaux", and due to the narrow doorway of the courtyard, she can only drive the car slowly forward and backwards at the door, so that it can be repeated 14 times before driving into the garage. But on one lucky day, she drove 13 times and went in.
In fact, long after the filming of Jacques Demi of Nantes, Varda's film style began to shift to participatory documentaries (artising the film installation).

Demi's film collides with a large area of saturated colors and stitches together visual harmony and beauty.

Potatoes for Varda
It wasn't until 2000's The Gleaner that 78-year-old Varda stumbled upon a heart-shaped potato that was discarded by the market for its improper size. Although these potatoes are no longer glamorous in appearance, they can still be eaten, made as decorations, and even continue to grow.
Later, Varda brought back some from abandoned potato piles, which weathered and began to wrinkle, dry, and sprout. Varda uses potatoes that leave the earth and gradually dry up to compare the process of aging, and also expresses that the old life is still full of vitality, looking for the right nourishment in the air.

90 "brooms"
At the age of 80, Varda gave her a copy of "The Beach of Agnès", and her neighbors and friends each came to the courtyard with a broom to wish her a happy birthday. Big and small, long and short, delicate, simple broomsticks, and one was being sent by mail.
Broom In French slang, "broom" is pronounced similarly to "years". When Varda's yard was filled with upside-down brooms, it was as if he had seen the different years he had traveled. In a humorous way, he teases the passage of time and cuteness.

Mirror on the beach
She also laid large and small mirrors on the beach to record herself in the mirror. The mirrors are both independent and overlap each other, like an intertextuality, and behind the camera is the viewer, who sees the mirror, who sees Varda, who sees the beach, and who in front of the camera sees the viewer in the opposite way.
Varda said, "That's exactly the portrait I wanted." In multiple narratives, the memory also seems to become the narrator.

It is a story that many people are familiar with, she and photographer JR traveled around France, they went into french towns, villages, factories, ports to photograph workers, farmers, herders, postmen, waitresses and other ordinary people, invited residents to take photos and printed them on the spot, and pasted huge printed photos on the outer wall of the building.
The fascinating thing about Varda's films is not only the technique and artistic concept of the film, but also the fact that her unique way of expression injects emotions into the lens and explores and cares for French society.
