Zhang Yan, born on August 19, 1918 in Xingping, Shaanxi, was originally named Zhang Kegang. Although he was a peasant boy, he was born to love to watch drama, and when he was studying at Xi'an No. 2 Junior High School (now Shaanxi Normal University Affiliated Middle School), he participated in some performances with his classmates under the guidance of his teacher. After the Xi'an Incident, he participated in the Xi'an Minjiaoguan Experimental Drama Troupe. In 1938, at the age of 20, he entered the Chongqing National Drama College and met Zhang Junxiang, a teacher who opened the way for him to become a professional actor.
In 1941, Zhang Yan was appointed as an actor in the Central Youth Drama Society and the Drama Troupe.
