Galileo, who had been suffering from poverty, referred to the manufacturing principle of the toy telescope invented by the Dutch optical instrument manufacturer, and spent 17 years researching and improving it into a more accurate astronomical telescope, and dedicated it to the Republic of Venice.
At first, the senators of the Republic were excited and bent on selling Galileo's inventions around the world, and because Galileo was a cash cow, the senators decided to double his salary and tenure. The senators were deeply aware of Galileo's deeds, but could not take back the benefits given to Galileo, and since then Galileo has continued to improve his astronomical telescope with a generous salary, and then discovered a series of astronomical phenomena. For example, planets are spheres like Earth, Venus has moon-like phase changes, sunspots on the surface of the Sun, moons around Jupiter, and so on. More importantly, his astronomical observations proved the Polish astronomer Copernicus' hypothesis that the Earth was not stationary but orbited the Sun.
The fighting method between Galileo and the senators is basically the prototype of many conflicts of human activities, that is, the confrontation between worldly values and transcendent meaning. The secular values represented by the senators prevailed most of the time in the human world, and the transcendent meaning represented by Galileo, although the leading force leading the evolution of human progress, was always bumpy and obstructed. People only care about what telescopes can see on earth, but Galileo is concerned about what telescopes can see in the sky.
Not only that, but what is more valuable is that we should see in Galileo's actions the courage and wisdom to doubt the authority, he did not believe in the "geocentric theory" that was recognized by the world at that time, so what he had to bear was not only the challenge of the "geocentric theory" theory, but the attack of the entire Western traditional church power, because the "geocentric theory" conforms to and supports the authority of the church, no wonder Engels called him "one of the giants who can break the old theory and create a new theory regardless of any obstacles." It was Galileo who possessed the qualities of a true philosopher, a force for truth and wisdom that drove him to doubt and disprove worldly fallacies.
