However, this is not the case for domestic new energy vehicle companies, as can be seen from the latest wholesale sales data released by the Passenger Association that domestic new energy wholesale sales in 2022 will be 6.49 million units, a year-on-year increase of 96% from 3.31 million units in 2021. Most new energy vehicle companies have also doubled their sales in 2022, and "mad bulls" like BYD have achieved a remarkable year-on-year increase of 208.64%.

On April 25, the State Council issued the Opinions on Further Releasing Consumption Potential and Promoting the Sustainable Recovery of Consumption. Among them, it is clearly proposed to support the accelerated development of new energy vehicles. On May 31, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, the Ministry of Commerce, and the Energy Bureau issued the Notice on Carrying out the 2022 New Energy Vehicle Rural Activities to further support the consumption of new energy vehicles. Under the guidance of the "Opinions on Further Unleashing Consumption Potential and Promoting the Sustainable Recovery of Consumption" and the "Notice on Launching 2022 New Energy Vehicle Rural Activities", new policies for the purchase of new energy vehicles have been introduced across the country.

From the subsidy policies introduced by various localities, we can see that the time of application of subsidies varies from place to place, and Hefei and Anyang, which were the first to launch subsidies, began to implement them on April 1. According to the different economic levels of various places, the subsidy amount is also differentiated, most of the subsidy amounts in various places range from thousands of yuan to 10,000 yuan, of which Shenzhen has the most generous subsidy amount, and the purchase of more than 200,000 yuan of new energy cars subsidizes 20,000 yuan / vehicle.

As can be seen from the data released by the passenger association, the cumulative retail sales of passenger vehicles nationwide from January to December 2022 were 20.543 million units, a year-on-year increase of 1.9%, compared with the total domestic retail sales of new energy passenger vehicles from January to December 2022 of 5.674 million units, a year-on-year increase of 90%. The growth in sales of new energy vehicles is clearly in sharp contrast to traditional fuel vehicles, which is not unrelated to the preferential policies for new energy introduced in various places. However, in the sales ranking of new energy manufacturers released by the Passenger Association, it can be seen that in the market environment of the general rise in the entire industry, the sales of each car company have also increased year-on-year, however, the increase has produced a clear differentiation, and even negative growth among the top ten car companies in terms of sales. If the entire new energy market grows by 90% as the "passing line", it is also a few joys and several sorrows.
It can be seen in the retail sales ranking of new energy manufacturers in 2022 that the top three are still BYD, SAIC-GM-Wuling and Tesla, and the ranking of these three car companies is exactly the same as in 2021. Compared with the "passing line" of 90% year-on-year growth in the new energy vehicle market in 2022, the 208.2% year-on-year growth makes BYD completely "consecrated" in 2022, with a total annual sales of nearly 1.8 million almost exceeding the sum of sales from second to sixth place in the sales ranking, and its market share of 31.7% is unparalleled.
SAIC-GM-Wuling remains second on the list, with total annual sales of more than 440,000 vehicles up just 2.5 percent from last year, the second-to-last growth rate, well below the industry's 90 percent growth rate. Hongguang MINIEV is still its main sales model, which sold a total of 404,800 units in 2022, an increase of only 2.4% year-on-year, and from the December sales data, Hongguang MINIEV only sold 34,523 units, down 31.7% year-on-year, too relying on a single model is SAIC-GM-Wuling's problem.
In third place is Tesla China, with annual total sales of nearly 440,000 units up 37.1% year-on-year, still below the industry's 90% growth rate. In fact, Tesla's market performance in 2022 can be described as ups and downs. Orders accumulated at the beginning of the year, and Tesla was busy accelerating production. After the production has increased significantly, sales have not kept up, and there is even a backlog of inventory in the fourth quarter, so Tesla is busy with price promotions.
With a total sales of 304,900 units, Geely Auto ranks fourth on the list, but in terms of growth rate, Geely is definitely the leader. The 277.9% year-on-year growth even exceeded BYD's 208.2% growth rate. "Having more children and fighting" has become a key factor for Geely Automobile's ability to achieve such a high growth rate, and its new energy brands such as Geely, Geometry, Lynk & Co, Extreme Krypton, and Rui Lan have repeatedly achieved new sales records while continuously launching new products, and finally achieved rapid growth in total sales.
GAC AION ranks fifth in the sales rankings. With total sales of over 270,000 units, the company achieved a y/y increase of 115.6%. It is worth mentioning that GAC AION's growth rate in 2021 was 111.5%, and GAC AION's growth rate has increased steadily.
The ideal car in "Wei Xiaoli" rose from the tenth position in 2021 to the ninth, and the sales of more than 130,000 units increased by 47.2% compared with 2021, although it underperformed the "passing line" of 90%, but the sales performance was remarkable; NIO and Xpeng Motors fell from ninth and seventh in 2021 to eleventh and twelfth respectively, and the growth rate also fell from 109.1% and 275.2% in 2021 to 34% and 23%, respectively, although it still maintained positive growth, but the decline rate was obvious.
Another notable manufacturer on the list is Great Wall Motor. Great Wall Motor's total new energy sales in 2022 were 123,920 units, a year-on-year decrease of 7.5% compared with the total sales of 133997 units in 2021, from the fourth place on the new energy sales list in 2021 to the tenth in 2022. In 2022, when the entire new energy industry is developing rapidly, new energy sales have experienced negative growth, and Great Wall Motor should reflect on its brand strategy, after all, products such as Ora Ballet Cat and Salon Mecha Dragon are not in line with the taste of the public.
With the withdrawal of subsidies, where will the development of new energy go in 2023?
With the withdrawal of subsidies, 2023 will be a more differentiated year for various car companies. Tesla took the lead in the first shot of price reduction at the beginning of the year, and the reduction of 2-48,000 yuan can be called Tesla's largest reduction in China. AITO followed closely behind, with the highest drop reaching 30,000 yuan. In sharp contrast, car companies represented by BYD have announced price increases in 2023. The very different market strategies make 2023 just start full of gunpowder, which also dooms the new energy war in 2023 to be more intense.
From the perspective of profit margin, Tesla's net profit per vehicle in the first half of 2022 exceeded $10,000, and the profit margin was significantly higher than that of its peers. In contrast, BYD's net profit in the third quarter of 2022 reached an all-time high of 9,900 yuan. As an industry leader, Tesla has stronger scale advantages and cost control capabilities, and also has the confidence to take the lead in reducing prices. It is foreseeable that Tesla's "historically low price" will further intensify competition in the new energy vehicle market in 2023, which will be a blockbuster blow to some car companies with small profits or even losses.
Although the domestic production and sales of new energy vehicles will double year-on-year in 2022, and the penetration rate has exceeded expectations, the market differentiation has been very obvious. The prosperity and bustle of the entire market seems to have nothing to do with some car companies, and the current two-eight polarized Matthew effect may intensify in 2023.
