From 1715 to 1738, the castle was greatly expanded by the Italian architect Visgonti. The castle covers an area of almost 70 hectares and is heptagonal in shape, with seven arrow towers and four gates. Among the two surviving gates, one is the arched triumphal arch decorated with statues of mythical warriors, and the other is the equestrian statue of Emperor Carlo VI. In front of the Forbidden City there are monuments commemorating the leader of the peasant uprising of 1784, Horia, and others, and a statue of "Mihai the Brave". Inlaid in the walls of the palace are large bronze reliefs depicting the welcoming of the "brave Mihai" to the city by the inhabitants of Albayuria. The National Museum of Unification was the birthplace of the Resolution on the Unification of Transylvania and Romania on December 1, 1918. Other monuments include the Horia's necropolis, the 18th-century Roman Catholic Church, the Batuani Library (built in 1792) and the Observatory (one of the first in Europe).
