In this era of challenges and opportunities, digital transformation is the key to coping with the harsh environment, reshaping business models, and driving high-quality growth in the industrial sector. As a future-oriented technology, industrial 5G is a key infrastructure for the comprehensive construction of smart factories, which can help realize the interconnection of all links from design and production to sales and service, promote the integration and optimization of resources, stimulate new business models and potentials, and further promote the digital transformation and high-quality development of Chinese industrial enterprises.

Siemens is one of the leading companies in industrial communication and a member of 5G-ACIA. Siemens has been actively engaged in the research of industrial 5G, a new communication standard, focusing on the development of industrial 5G product portfolio and related solutions, enabling Chinese industrial enterprises to release more potential through the application of industrial 5G.

Industrial 5G will help optimize how factories make decisions, produce and operate operations

Industry 4.0, smart factories, and the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) represent the future of industrial manufacturing. Designing more flexible, autonomous and efficient factories and intralogistics systems requires the right communication platforms and comprehensive connectivity. Industrial 5G communications illustrate a bright new picture of what is possible in the future.

With reliable 5G connectivity, the full potential of the Industrial Internet of Things can be unleashed. One of the biggest advantages of industrial 5G in M2M (machine to machine) communication is ultra-low latency. In specific industrial application scenarios, applications such as mobile manipulators in production, autonomous vehicles in transportation and logistics, and real-time control of field devices can all be realized through industrial 5G. With 5G communication, information transmission between mobile units such as AGVs (Automated Guided Cars) takes only a few milliseconds.

In 2022, Siemens officially launched an industrial 5G solution for the Chinese market, providing more secure, high-speed and flexible industrial 5G end-to-end communication for industrial enterprises. Through Siemens Industry 5G support industrial protocol transmission, control PLC can achieve PROFINET communication with industrial field I/O modules, so that more and more real-time applications of industrial field equipment can be interconnected through industrial 5G, realizing the comprehensive monitoring of massive data of the whole plant, automatic control of production lines, precise scheduling of mobile devices, ultra-remote system debugging and fault diagnosis and other applications, accelerating the transformation and upgrading of data-driven production and operation, and helping Chinese industrial enterprises improve their digital level.

Industrial 5G coverage is gradually expanding, unleashing greater value in 5G fully connected factories

In 2022, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology issued the "Guidelines for the Construction of 5G Fully Connected Factories" to promote enterprises to build different types of 5G fully connected factories such as production line, workshop and factory level. The Construction Guide clearly encourages enterprises to explore 5G independent private networks based on licensed radio frequencies and innovate flexible and diverse 5G network construction service models.

With the release of higher 5G standards and the upgrade of 5G networks, industrial 5G applications in factories go deep into the on-site production line control level from data collection and video upload, and more and more factory applications can be interconnected through 5G networks. At present, China has established thousands of 5G industry virtual private networks, the penetration rate of 5G applications in large industrial enterprises has been greatly improved, 5G applications in some fields have been applied on a large scale, and can be widely replicated and promoted, and the value of 5G fully connected factories has been further released.

According to the "14th Five-Year Plan", tens of thousands of enterprises are expected to carry out the construction of 5G fully connected factories in the future, and industrial 5G will usher in broader market opportunities. In the future, 5G networks will be deeply integrated with traditional industrial backbone networks, and Siemens will develop and design more real-time and reliable industrial 5G overall solutions according to the needs of industrial enterprises, and continue to help enterprises build 5G fully connected factories.
