Except for one set that includes a charger, which costs 178.99 yuan, the remaining 45 data cables range from 2.08 yuan to 168 yuan each.

There are 39 brands marked with brand names, involving 20 brands, including Bull, Vivo, Baseus, Romas, Greenlink, Samsung, OPPO, Pinsheng, Huawei, Xiaomi, Honor, Apple and other well-known brands.

Compare test results

This comparative test mainly tests and compares the electrical safety and hardware reliability of charging data lines.

1. Electrical safety

1. Nearly half of the samples such as "Pinsheng" have poor flame retardant ability

  All 22 samples were judged to be flame retardant due to sample burnout, kraft burnout, and/or data cable burning time of more than 1 minute.

  The nominal brands involved are: Anker, Pinsheng, Oleson, Xiaomi, Base, Romas, Yichi, CHIJIE, Tafiq, MKO, Ankyo/Terrafeng, etc

  The test found that the outer skin of the braided thread will reduce the flame retardant performance and even help the combustion effect.

  Data lines that do not have flame retardant performance will quickly burn until the combustible materials are carbonized and fall off when exposed to fire. In actual use, once the data line touches the open flame, it is easy to cause fire danger.

2 "Ankeyou/Terra Feng" and other 12 samples performed poorly in pressure drop test

  YD/T 1591-2021 "Technical Requirements and Test Methods for Power Adapter and Charging/Data Interface of Mobile Communication Terminal" recommends that the voltage drop of the charging data line should be less than 750 millivolts.

  The results of the comparative test showed that:

  • 12 samples with a pressure drop of more than 750 millivolts, the nominal brands involve: Yichi, CHIJIE, TAFIQ, Tafiq, etc.;
  • Among them, 7 models have a pressure drop of more than 1000 millivolts, the price is only 2.14 yuan, and the maximum voltage drop of the data line with the nominal brand "Ankeyou/Terra Feng" is as high as 2310 millivolts.

  The greater the voltage drop, the more power is lost, the lower the charging rate, and even the data line will heat up, causing potential safety hazards.

Second, hardware reliability

(1) The plugging performance of 8 samples is not satisfactory

  • 3 samples were not verified by the withstand voltage test, involving the nominal brand:

  If it has not passed the withstand voltage test, it means that the performance is impaired and cannot be used normally, and the durability of plugging and unplugging is not good.

(2) The corrosion resistance of 21 samples is weak

After a 24-hour salt spray test, it was found that:

  • 16 samples showed varying degrees of rust, and one of the unbranded samples had sheath shedding due to salt spray corrosion;
  • 2 samples lost charging function;
  • After the salt spray test, 2 samples failed the withstand voltage test and 1 sample failed the insulation resistance test.

  The charging data cable is exposed to the air for a long time, if the corrosion resistance of the exposed part of the metal is poor, the conductive path may be disconnected due to rust, and the charging cable fails; It may also cause excessive resistance due to pin rust, which will induce overheating of the charging interface during the charging process, and there are hidden dangers such as burning the interface.

(3) The bending resistance of 9 samples was poor

  • After the completion of the test, the charging function of 5 samples failed, and one unbranded sample charging connector was completely broken and fell off;

  In daily use, the part of the charging data cable connected to mobile communication terminals such as mobile phones is often bent, which is prone to damage to the cable insulation skin or interface, resulting in charging failure or other safety problems.

(4) Port compression deformation in the thrust (interface side stress) test of 13 samples

  • In the process of thrust application of 11 samples, the interface showed excessive bending as shown in the figure example;
  • The nominal brand is a sample of Pinsheng (model TC-FC-1000), and the joint completely falls off during the test;
  • Samples with the nominal brand Anker (model A8622), the charging function failed after the test.

Questions and suggestions

  Through this comparative test and related market research, the China Consumer Association pointed out that there are the following typical problems in the charging data line industry:

1. Incomplete product identification

  There are problems such as lack or lack of labeling of product information in the industry, and 7 samples are not marked with brand names, of which 6 are only simple packaging and no sales packaging.

2. Separate implementation of standards

  There are 36 models that explicitly indicate production execution standards and 10 models that do not. The vast majority of the explicit standards are enterprise standards, and a few are industry standards that have expired or security standards that are not related to data line products.

Consumption tips

Look at the brand

  Try to buy genuine data cables from well-known manufacturers. Generally speaking, its production process will be better than that of miscellaneous enterprises.

Look at the material

  Generally, the outer packaging of the data cable will indicate the wrapping material of the data cable. PVC and TPE are common cladding materials for data cables.

  PVC is the abbreviation of polyvinyl chloride, which has high flame retardancy and good mechanical properties. TPE is a thermoplastic material with good aging resistance.

Look at the specifications

  Pay attention to the current value marked on the product and select the data cable that matches the specifications of the charging head. The charging head does not match the specifications of the data cable, which may cause abnormal heating of the cable and connector and material aging.

Keep old data cables up to date

  The frequency of use and usage habits will affect the life of the charging data line, once the performance is found to decrease, it should be replaced in time.

  If the outer coat of the charging data cable is damaged, the charging cable is plugged into the electrical equipment, the contact is poor or the heating during the charging process is serious, the new cable should be replaced as soon as possible.
