"The Shepherd Who Planted Trees" is an excerpt from the picture book "The Man Who Planted Trees". The original title of the text was "The Man Who Planted Hope and Happiness." The short story was originally written in 1953 by the author Jean Jono at the request of the Reader's Digest feature "Who are the most extraordinary and memorable people you've ever met?" Afterwards Jean Gionor issued a statement saying that the story was written and that Eliza Buffy was fictional.
