Chapter 11, Book Burning and Confucianism

Book burning pit Confucianism

In the thirty-fourth year of Qin Shi Huang (213 BC), Dr. Chun Yuyue proposed that "Shigu" be given the title of Wang Weiping Domain with the same surname Wang at the banquet of Xianyang Palace.

Prime Minister Li Si used the topic to play the role, believing that this was a criticism of the imperial government, and this criticism was due to the separation of schools and the existence of private learning, which had nothing to do with the gains and losses of the Qin government.

He asked the imperial court to burn all the books in the world, leaving only some books such as medicine and planting trees.

Qin Shi Huang adopted Li Si's advice.

Qin Shi Huang sent people to investigate, Fang Shi Rusheng turned to report, and more than 460 people in Xianyang City, all of whom were killed by the pit.

This event was a further expansion of Qin Shi Huang's absolute monarchy in the ideological and cultural fields.

His purpose was to unify ideas and consolidate imperial power, but he clamped down on ideas and destroyed culture, causing far-reaching harm to future generations.
