Translator's Note:

Thank you to the translators for collecting AHDB Market Intelligence's reports over the years and putting them together into a report that can be compared both horizontally and vertically! We see that countries with abundant raw material supplies directly lead to low production costs, such as the United States, Brazil and Canada; Many European countries can only reduce the total cost by improving breeding efficiency and feed utilization, such as Denmark, Belgium and the Netherlands, which provides a good example for the resource-strapped Chinese pig industry.

There is a country in particular to mention that Italy because of the production of more ham, the pursuit of flavor, so the slaughter weight is high, but the daily weight gain and material weight ratio are not ideal, and the mainland is now very similar, worthy of in-depth discussion by industry peers.

Pigs weaned per sow per year

In 2021, the number of weaned piglets per year in the EU increased from 29.6 in 2020 to 29.7 in 2021, an increase of less than 1%. As Figure 4 shows, the performance of many EU countries continues to improve.

The overall average number of pigs weaned per sow per year in the EU InterPIG countries showed a less than 1% increase in 2021, up from 29.6 in 2020 to 29.7 in 2021. As shown in Figure 5, performance continued to improve in many EU countries.

Denmark and the Netherlands had the best numbers of weaned piglets, with Denmark achieving an average of 34 weaning per sow per year. Non-EU countries, including the UK, continue to perform below the EU average.

Denmark and the Netherlands had the best results for pigs weaned, with Denmark achieving an average of 34 pigs weaned per sow per year. The non-EU countries, including Great Britain, continued to perform below the EU average.

There is a difference of 7.9 piglets per year per sow between the worst performing EU InterPIG member states (Austria, 26.1) and the best performing countries (Denmark, 34).

There is a difference of 7.9 pigs weaned per sow per year between the poorest- performing EU InterPIG country (Austria at 26.1) and the best-performing country (Denmark at 34).

In the UK, the number of piglets weaned per sow per year increased by 1% to 27.7. In 2021, the PSY of outdoor pig herds in the UK decreased by 1% to 24.3 heads.

The number of pigs weaned per sow per year in Great Britain indoor herds showed a 1% increase to 27.7. Great Britain’s outdoor herds showed a 1% decrease to 24.3 in 2021.

Although a large proportion of sows in the UK are kept outdoors, the low number of annual weaned sows in all systems compared to EU countries remains a major reason for the relatively high production costs. If the UK wants to compete with the rest of Europe, it needs to address this issue.

While Great Britain has a significant proportion of sows kept outdoors, the lower number of pigs weaned per sow per year in all systems is still a major cause of the relatively high cost of production compared with EU countries. This needs to be addressed if Great Britain want to be competitive with the rest of Europe.

PSY is caused by three different factors: litter size, annual litter number of sows and pre-weaning mortality.

Pigs weaned per sow per year is a result of three different elements: pigs born alive per litter, litters per sow per year and pre-weaning mortality.

● Indoor and outdoor herds in the UK produce an average of 2.2 litters per sow per year. The EU average is 2.3, with non-EU countries the US and Brazil continuing to reach 2.4.

Great Britain’s indoor and outdoor herds averaged 2.2 litters per sow per year. The EU average is 2.3, with non-EU countries USA and Brazil continuing to achieve 2.4

● The UK has a pre-weaning mortality rate (12.3% for indoor herds and 12.5% for outdoor herds) below the EU average of 14%.

Great Britain’s pre-weaning mortality (indoor sows 12.3% and outdoor sows 12.5%) was lower than the EU average of 14%

● In the UK, an important factor influencing the number of weaned piglets per year is the litter size of 14.3 indoors and 12.6 outdoors. In 2021, the average for EU participating countries was 15.

A significant impact on pigs weaned per sow per year in Great Britain is the number of pigs born alive per litter, with indoor sows at 14.3 and outdoor sows at 12.6.The 2021 average for participating EU countries was 15

MSY

Pigs finished per sow peryear

As Figure 5 shows, the number of pigs provided to fattening per indoor sow in the UK increased slightly, from 25.4 in 2020 to 25.6 in 2021. For outdoor sows, the number of pigs provided for finishing, from 22.6 in 2020 to 22.4 in 2021 (unchanged from 2019).

As shown in Figure 5, the average number of pigs finished per indoor sow in Great Britain slightly increased, from 25.4 in 2020 to 25.6 in 2021. For outdoor sows, pigs finished per sow per year decreased, from 22.6 in 2020 to 22.4 in 2021 (the same as 2019).

In 2021, the EU provided 27.9 finishing pigs per year on average sows, the same as in 2020. Denmark remains the country with the highest MSY, supplying more than 31 finishing pigs per year. Among InterPIG member countries, the UK still provides the lowest number of fattening pigs per year by outdoor herds.

In 2021, the EU average for pigs finished per sow per year was 27.9, the same as in 2020. Denmark still has the highest numbers, finishing more than 31 pigs per sow per year. Within the InterPIG group, Great Britain outdoor herds continue to have the lowest number of pigs finished per sow per year.
