At that time, the Cuban Missile Crisis was a major event in bipolar confrontation that once put the world on the brink of nuclear war, but have you ever thought about the question, that is, how the missiles placed in Cuba were secretly transported in from thousands of miles away and how they were discovered?
The crisis occurred from October 16 to 29, 1962, but the ballistic missile that caused the dispute was allowed to be deployed in Cuba in May, in fact, the Soviet Union was hesitant at first to deploy intermediate-range ballistic missiles in Cuba that could directly attack the country, which was regarded by the Cuban side as a weakness, seeing the possibility of losing Cuba as an ally, and considering that the missiles here could be exchanged for interests in Europe in the future, and finally agreed to this risky plan.
In order to keep the operation secret, the Soviet Union sent an agricultural delegation in the spring of that year, ostensibly to help Cuba develop agriculture, but in fact some military experts and missile experts were mixed in, this group of people should have been pre-surveyed, evaluated, and the subsequent official operation was named the Maskirovka program.
At the beginning of the plan, even the participating troops did not know what they were going to do, and they even received winter clothes and chemical equipment, which seemed to be going to a cold region covered in ice and snow, but in fact, this was also a trick, and even the captain did not know the destination until he arrived in the Atlantic. In July of that year, some "agricultural experts" and "machine operators" arrived in Cuba first, who were actually missile-related technicians, and then the Soviet Union transported a total of more than 40,000 troops.
The ballistic missiles transported by the Soviet Union to Cuba were the R-12 with an effective range of 2,000 kilometers and the R-14 with an effective range of 4,500 kilometers, the first missiles arrived on 8 September, and by October several missile launch bases were under construction.
So how did the beautiful side find out that Cuba began to deploy ballistic missiles? The more common version was that it was discovered by U-2 aerial reconnaissance photos in mid-October, but in fact the beautiful country had already discovered the problem earlier.
Cuba began equipping itself with Soviet-made surface-to-air missiles in 1961, which were originally defensive weapons and therefore did not attract much attention, but in September U-2 reconnaissance aircraft discovered something interesting that Cuba's surface-to-air missiles were deployed in the same way that the Soviet Union protected ballistic missiles, suggesting that Cuba might have a ballistic missile base. At the end of September, U-2 also photographed Soviet transport ships with unusually sized cargo boxes on deck. Further gains were made from reconnaissance filming on 14 October, with the discovery of construction sites in western Cuba and the identification of hidden missiles by analysing photographs.
In addition to high-altitude reconnaissance, the beautiful country also mobilized spies, and a large number of reports were sent to the intelligence department in a short period of time, some of which were of great interest to intelligence officers, and they mentioned that a large number of trucks were passing through the streets with suspected canvas-covered missiles, which were very large in size, much larger than conventional surface-to-air missiles.
Based on all kinds of information, the intelligence services of the beautiful country have determined that Cuba is deploying ballistic missiles that can directly attack the mainland, and then negotiations with the Soviet side have begun, the crisis officially began, and finally the Soviet Union withdrew all the missiles.
