The wife threatens her husband, often referred to as the "Hedong Lion Roar". Why is "Hedong" referred to as an evil wife? Why is the "lion roar" a metaphor for might? There's a history to this.
According to the Song Dynasty Hongmai's "Rong Zhai Essay Chen Jichang", the Song Dynasty Yongjia Mansion produced a man who was both literate and martial, and had a funny nature, his surname was Chen, his name was Yu, his name was Ji Chang, and he called himself a resident of Longqiu. Chen Yu is heavy on literature and martial arts, good at writing poetry, gathering righteous people in the world, and good at socializing. Although his wife Liu Shi is beautiful, she has a very fierce temperament.
Frustrated and disheartened by his political career, Chen Yu, who had been an official for several years, left the bustling downtown and moved his family to the countryside to live a quiet and peaceful life. But those friends of Chen Yu's past did not cut off contact with him because he moved into seclusion. On the contrary, everyone thought that Chen Yu's reclusive life was very lonely, and in order to give him some comfort, they often visited him and talked and chatted with him.
Among the visiting guests, there are both chivalrous people in the mountains and forests, as well as prominent officials and nobles. Everyone gathered together, a small feast on three days, and a big feast on five days. According to the social customs of that time, whenever there was a feast, a few singers and prostitutes were recruited to sing and dance in front of the banquet. Because of this, Chen's wife Liu Shi was often jealous, and she thought that this was her husband's friend deliberately embarrassing herself.
In order to prevent her husband from fooling around with other women, Liu Shi did everything in his power. At each banquet, although she was not present, she often ran to the next room when her husband and his friends and colleagues were having a good time, hit the wall with a stick, and shouted and screamed until the guests left in disappointment. Chen Yu had always been afraid of Liu Shi, and although Liu Shi's behavior made him very faceless, he never dared to come forward to stop it.
Once, the great poet Su Shi sat down at a banquet, and after three rounds of drinking, Chen Yu's wife Liu Shi came to harass him again. Seeing Liu's fierceness and Chen Yu's helplessness, Su Shi recited four poems to ridicule the other party. The poem said: "The residents of Longqiu are also pitiful, and they talk about the emptiness and say that there are sleepless nights." Overhearing the roar of the lion in Hedong, the staff fell in a daze. ”
The Longqiu resident in the poem refers to Chen Yu, and Hedong is the place where the nobles of the Liu surname live, alluding to Chen's wife Liu. And "lion roar" is originally a term used by Buddhists to compare justice and majesty, because Chen Yu is good at talking about Buddha, Su Shi used this to describe Liu Shi roaring like a lion. According to this story, later generations derived the idiom "Hedong lion roar", which specifically refers to a jealous and fierce woman. At the same time, the term is often used to mock men who are afraid of their wives.
