At 6:10 a.m. on November 15, 2022, the Karen National Union/Karen National Liberation Army (KNU/KNLA) and four resistance forces jointly operated and fired three 107mm rockets at Magway Air Base.
The operation, jointly carried out by the Karen National Union, the Golden Eagle People's Defense Army, the Magway Eagle People's Defense Army, the Ren'an Qiang People's Defense Army and the Monster Special Combat Team, according to feedback from Burmese watermelon soldiers (green on the outside and red on the inside, referring to the Burmese soldiers who are committed to the revolution), the attack resulted in the destruction of three jet fighters, the damage of two fighter jets, the death of five Burmese troops on the spot, and the death of three Burmese soldiers in hospital.
Karen National Union spokesman Padoh Saw Taw Nee said two MiG-29 fighter jets and another fighter jet had been confirmed to have been destroyed, killing at least eight Burmese soldiers.
The Golden Eagle People's Defense Army said that the attack on the Magway air base was because of the weak defense of the base, and hoped that resistance forces in other areas would also attack the Myanmar army's air base, so that the Myanmar army's air strikes could be effectively reduced.
Recently, flight training has been conducted at Magway Air Base, with fighter jets taking off on November 14, but no fighters have taken off or landed since the November 15 attack, and the Burmese army is still conducting a search nearby.
Magway Air Base, home to MiG-29 fighter jets and F-7 fighter jets, was hit by 107 rockets on April 29, 2021, and residents said six Burmese soldiers died, which the military denies. On 8 August 2021, the Magway airbase was hit again by two bombs, allegedly causing damage to an ammunition depot.
