During the breeding season, the color of the reproductive glands is used to distinguish between males and females: after the male sea cucumber expels the milky white or yellow reproductive glands from the reproductive hole above the head, the female sea cucumber begins to expel pink or orange-red reproductive glands, and the two reproductive glands combine in the water to form an embryo, which begins to divide into 512 cells, forming an ear-shaped juvenile that can only be seen under a microscope, and there are also cilia bands. Then, after the barrel larval stage, it finally metamorphoses into adults.
