The alligator eel is a freshwater giant carnivorous fish endemic to North America, which has lived on Earth for more than 100 million years, making it the largest of the seven existing species of gar eels. Its snout protrudes anteriorly, so named for its crocodile-like short snout and two rows of dagger-like sharp teeth densely packed with upper and lower jaws. Its internal organs and fish eggs are highly toxic and are found in the Gulf Coast rivers and estuarine waters from Mexico to Florida, the lower Missouri and Ohio rivers, and two lakes in Nicaragua. There are no alligator eels in China, so alligator eels are invasive alien species and are extremely harmful.
