After defeats to Brighton and Brentford in the opening game of the season, Harry Maguire was left out of the starting line-up. Since then, the 29-year-old has started just one game in the league, with Ten Hag's main defensive partners being Rissandro Martinez and Rafael Varane.

Varane's recent injury has brought Harry Maguire back to the squad, but his long-term future at Old Trafford still seems bleak, with The Guardian reporting that he is not in Ten Hag's plans.

While the Manchester United boss admires Maguire's professionalism, he sees Maguire's "slow pace" as a problem and wants to introduce another option at the back to fill the void of Martinez and Varane.

Maguire, who was signed from Leicester City for £80 million in 2019, was appointed captain less than six months after arriving at United during Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's tenure. The defender signed a six-year contract with the option to extend it until 2026. If United can transfer them at the end of the season, they will lose a lot.

Fred, meanwhile, was another man who didn't show up in Ten Hag's long-term plans. The Brazil international is in the final 12 months of his contract at Old Trafford, and although the club have the option to extend it for another year, the club are not expected to activate it.

Like Harry Maguire, Ten Hag has been impressed with Fred's work ethic but is eager to continue reforming the midfield after signing Casemiro in the summer, and Casemiro is already a key figure in midfield.

Fred, who has been with Manchester United since 2018, moved from Shakhtar Donetsk for a £52 million transfer fee. But Ten Hag brought in Malaysia, Martinez, Eriksen, Anthony and Casemiro in his first summer in charge. At the same time, Ten Hag is also keen to bring in a new long-term option up front, with Napoli star Victor Ossimon considered one of the strikers he is considering.
