Karl Urban
Early life
Carl Urban was born in Wellington, New Zealand in 1972. His father was a German immigrant who owned a leather goods store, and his mother worked for a film company in Wellington. Through his mother, young Urban came into contact with the film industry and became interested in it.
Urban attended St. Mark's Church School, where he showed a love for acting. At the age of 8, he landed his first role, appearing in an episode of the New Zealand television series Pioneer Woman and speaking only one line. Although he later participated in school stage performances, it was not until after graduating from high school that he returned to professional acting.

From 1986 to 1990, he studied at Wellington College College. He then entered Victoria University of Wellington to pursue a Bachelor of Arts course, but left a year later to start an acting career. Over the next few years, in addition to his Wellington area theatre roles, he starred in several local TV commercials. Eventually, he moved to Auckland, where he got guest roles on many TV shows. In 1995, Urban briefly moved to Bondi Beach, Sydney, Australia, before returning to New Zealand the following year.

Urban first Hollywood role was in the 2002 horror film Ghost Ship. Since then, he has starred in a number of high-profile films, including the second and third installments of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, as Iome. He also played Leonard McCoy in the Star Trek reboot film series, Wako in the Star Legends series, Dred in SWAT Judge, and Skug in Thor 3: Ragnarok. Since 2019, he has played Billy Butcher in Amazon's online TV series Black Robe Pickets.
Personal life
In September 2004, Urban married his longtime partner, Natalie Wikhungi. They have two sons together. Lives in the wealthy Herne Bay district of Auckland, New Zealand. The couple announced their split in June 2014. From 2014 to 2018, Urban had a relationship with actress Katie Sachhoff.
