Since the initial period of 2013, IP co-branding seems to be the "traffic password" of the LEGO IDEAS series; Although there is also controversy such as "whether too many IDEAS co-branding will deviate from the original intention of letting players have their own works come to life", the popularity of various co-branded kits has allowed Lego to go further and further down this road, including classic series such as "The Big Bang Theory", "Friends", "Modern Primitives" and so on.
Correspondingly, there will be a lot of IP co-branded works that have not been selected in the IDEAS community, including many projects that broke through the 10,000 praise but unfortunately lost the selection, and the protagonist we want to introduce today, "The Addams Family" released by DisneyBrick55 is one of them.
"The Addams Family", created by American cartoonist Charles Adams and first serialized in The New Yorker in the '30s, tells the story of the Adams family living in a Victorian Gothic building that is either absurd or silly. Because the cartoonist has been obsessed with dead objects such as coffins, bones and tombstones since he was a child, the style of this comic is very gloomy and dark, but the core of its story is still American black humor, and if you can accept this style, it is also a special flavor.
According to the author, the prototype of the building is based on the TV series version that first brought this work to the screen in 1963, but now friends are more familiar with the live-action movie of the 90s and the cartoon of the same name released in 2019. Fortunately, the character differences in these versions are not too big, and friends who have seen the original work should be able to correspond one by one.
The façade of the whole building is very typical of the Victorian Gothic style, the façade and spires are quite well finished, combined with the brown patches on the red chimney, the diagonal seals in front of the windows and the yellow grass and wood decoration, the whole creates a unique sense of dilapidatement. Because the animated version of 2019 has a big magic change to the exterior of the building, friends who have only watched the animated version may be slightly dramatic, in short, it is still very restored to the Adams Manor in the series and the live-action film version.
Unlike the streetscape-type fully closed/layered easy-to-detach interior structure common in IDEAS architectural submissions, the author used a "half-sectional wall" design similar to the LEGO City Group on the back of the house, directly in the form of a section to display all the internal details to the outside, which is more convenient to play with minifigures. But that means it can't be placed with other streetscape buildings, and I personally don't like this half-cut building very much...
The living room on the first floor occupies about 1/3 of the interior area of the entire building, and the color is still relatively bright, except for the storage box left on the table, the painting style is relatively normal. But the man-eating flowers in the flower room in the side room are already hidden in the treacherous, indicating that a deeper darkness is coming.
The interior wall of the second floor turned iron gray, covered with nailed beds and iron virgins, two train models facing each other, and furniture displays gradually became strange.
The third floor is even more like the scene of the execution room, with a sharp axe on the guillotine, a proper horror film configuration.
This set of "The Addams Family", submitted in August 2020, took only 4 months to collect 10,000 likes and enter the final judging session of Lego in December of the same year, which shows its high popularity. However, in the third quarter of IDEAS the following year, it was not selected for Lego's final mass production list; Considering that the winner of that review was the current 21335 electric lighthouse, it may also be said that the loss was not unjust. At present, there are still several different "Addams" themed works in the IDEAS community that are being liked, and the highest number of likes has been close to 5,000 votes, I wonder if Lego will consider it this time?
That's all for this issue of IDEAS, and stay tuned for more: Lego Warehouse with Bad Snow.
