[Pelosi's husband attack suspect charged with two crimes, if found, face up to 50 years in prison] The US Department of Justice announced on October 31 that it formally indicted DePape, a 42-year-old California man, accusing him of allegedly attacking Paul Pelosi, the husband of House Speaker Pelosi, and attempting to kidnap Pelosi. The Justice Department said one of the charges was "assaulting the immediate family members of a federal government official," which carries a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison, while the second count was "attempting to kidnap a federal government official," which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years.
When questioned by police, the suspect DePape said that his original plan was to kidnap House Speaker Pelosi, and claimed that if she "lied," he would "break her kneecap." He also revealed that he did not leave when Paul Pelosi called the police because he felt that he was resisting tyranny and would not surrender.
