Winner of the 2011 BP Portrait Award, announced at the National Portrait Gallery in London. In a record-breaking year for entries, 57-year-old self-taught artist Wim Heldens won the prestigious first prize, having exhibited in the competition twice, but this year was only a finalist for the first time. His award-winning portrait Upset is a photograph of a 25-year-old student whom the artist painted more than a dozen times in his life. Wim Heldens won £25,000 and a commission worth £4,000 at the discretion of the National Portrait Gallery Trustees.

Born and raised in the south of the Netherlands, Wim Herdens was influenced by his parents' paintings, art books and music from an early age

Artistic influence. This artistic environment had a great influence on the young artist. Painter Tina Wesseling

First recognizing his talent, her encouragement eventually set him on the path to becoming a painter. Around the age of 18 he discovered that portraying characters realistically was what he really liked.
