On September 25, 2022, the "Hidden Pearls in the Grass - Downing Solo Exhibition" hosted by Space Zero and co-organized by Haihe Art Museum and Daku Art Center opened at Space 798. The exhibition features four series of works by artist Downing, including the "Door" series, the "Floor Tiles" series, the "Window" series during his Bachelor's and Masters' degrees, and the "Flesh and Tilian" series created during his Ph.D.
The exhibition specially invited Shao Yiyang, professor of the Central Academy of Fine Arts, doctoral supervisor and vice dean of the School of Humanities, as the academic advisor, Kang Wenfeng, executive director and artist of the Times Art Museum, as the academic host, and Zhang Changsian, deputy director of Tianjin Haihe Art Museum and director of the 798 Zero Space Exhibition, as the curator.
Academic Advisor Shao Yiyang:
I met Downing in the Contemporary Art and Philosophical Studies class, a good student who was interested in theory and had her own artistic ideas. Although the exhibition's "Flesh and Tire" series are all small paintings, I think her ideas are very good, Downing is influenced by Deleuze's tuber, nomadic body, organless body and other philosophies, she is not framed by the expressive method, breaking the norms of modernism, the fusion of artificial and natural, imagination and reality, flesh and spirit, these seemingly opposing things, this fusion has always run through her work, showing a kind of courage to break through, free spiritual force, I believe she will do better and better on this basis.
Academic Host Kang Wenfeng:
Downing's work touched me very much, allowing me to see the possibility of combining abstract art with locality, which at first glance is geometric abstraction, and if I look closely, I will find that it is a figurative object. Whether it is early figuration, mid-term abstraction, or now digital virtual art, you can see the explosive power of her creation.
Curator Zhang Changshou:
From CAFA to the doctoral studies, Tang Ning laid a very solid foundation, "Flesh and Tire" series is a transformation of Tang Ning's art from outward to introverted, it can be said that she created a novel-like image system.
Opening Guest Ariel:
The radiator is like an apocalypse in the exhibition hall, reminding me that this series of works is a floor tile in daily life, a structure in the building. The life image of "flesh and tire" comes from Deleuze's concept of "inorganic", reflecting the artist's strong imagination.
Artist Downing:
Thank you to the teachers for commenting on my work. I am always looking for my own painting language. It's like a person who has just started learning to speak, starting from the most basic words in daily life, such as doors, windows, bricks, etc. By the time I got to the Ph.D., I started trying to make sense. The theoretical classes during my PhD had a great influence on the creation of my new series. The title of this exhibition, "Pearls Hidden in the Grass," has two meanings. First, I invented the creature "Flesh and Tilian" and told its history. The sea becomes a mulberry field, so that the pearls in the sea surface and scatter among the grasses. This alludes to the temporal dimension of the new series. On the other hand, whether I did the "floor tile" series or the "window" series before, they are all accessible things in daily life. Whether in the grass or the floor tiles, there are sparkling dots in life, and I want to convey these beauty. So he named the exhibition "Pearls in the Grass".
