In the early morning of December 20, 1981, it was drizzling in the village of Kanchanaburi in Botarong County, southern Thailand. When local farmers were passing through a field full of water and weeds, they suddenly found hundreds of frogs jumping out of the nearby fields and gathering together to tear up. Soon thousands of frogs came to battle in droves from all directions.
The frogs fought more and more courageously in the grass until they were exhausted. The blood of the frog stained the muddy water, leaving more than 40 frog corpses after the war.
"Frog wars" have happened in many countries. In 1970, a quagmire 160 miles north of Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia, gathered tens of thousands of frogs, and the fierce fighting lasted for a full week.
What exactly causes the frog melee?
Experts have analyzed that the phenomenon of "frog warfare" often occurs after the rain. Frog eggs and tadpoles must develop and grow in water. In drought conditions, frogs do not lay eggs, and even if the eggs in the frog's abdomen are mature, they have to wait. Once the rain is enough, the frogs will come out. The male frog first chooses the appropriate water, calls loudly, attracts the female frog, and seeks a mate, thus forming a scene of flocks of frogs fighting.
During the mating process, the male frog chases the female frog, sometimes two or three male frogs chase a female frog, and sometimes the male frogs hug each other, so that there is a group of frogs fighting. The frog corpses that appeared after the war may be because the female frogs are stupid in their arms, and if they are held tightly by multiple male frogs, they must not escape and suffocate. It is also possible that some frogs are weaker in weight and die from excessive mate and spawning power. In addition, toads mixed in frog colonies are stimulated and may secrete venom, causing frogs to die of poison.
