Australian National Flower Day

The beauty of the bounty acacia

Origin of National Flower Day

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the announcement of Australia's National Acacia Day. It's a day for all Australians around the world to celebrate. The acacia, which is native to mainland Australia, has been Australia's national flower since 1988, and since 1912, the specially designed acacia has appeared in official government documents as part of the coat of arms of the Commonwealth of Australia.

Acacia Festival

For more than a century, Acacia Day has been a spring celebration in schools and communities, coinciding with the peak of local acacia blossoms, which flow from northern Australia to southern September in July.

On 1 September 1910, the first attempt was made to celebrate the "National" Acacia Festival in New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia. Since then, acacia festivals have begun to appear all over the country, but the timing varies between August and September, as people generally celebrate the festival when the acacia is in full bloom in their area. For example, the date of the Acacia Festival in New South Wales was changed to 1 August in 1916.

These different celebration dates around the place caused some confusion. In 1992, an agreement was reached between all states and territories, and 1 September was officially declared a National Acacia Day for all states and territories by the Australian Federal Government.
