The British iNews News Network said on September 17 that the United States is training "kamikaze pigeons" to intercept suspicious drones in response to the threat of attack.

To counter the threat of the emerging "swarm" type of armed drones, U.S. researchers are studying whether it is possible to use the flocking instinct of pigeons to counter armed drones. U.S. defense and security departments are busy dealing with the extraordinary pace of development of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) – robotics and self-driving aircraft technology is spreading from military to commercial.

According to an industry expert, the pigeon study was conducted by a private company in the United States to use the pigeon's natural gathering instinct and keen vision to attract it to the specific sounds and movements of a quadcopter drone. These birds will be trained to fly to machines (drones) or flocks of aircraft to stop potential attacks at the expense of their own lives.

The report believes that although this idea is still in the experimental stage, it is not unfounded in reality. During World War II, American scientists perfected a technique by training pigeons to recognize images of targets so that they could effectively pilot glider-style bombs. Recently, raptors have been trained to intercept drones that enter their territory, albeit with mixed results.

The report also argues that something as special as suicide birds is being carefully studied as a means of combating drones, which is equally a powerful proof of a more alarming view that the pace at which offensive drone technology is evolving poses a considerable threat even to the most advanced militaries. And if the technology is mastered by terrorist groups targeting Western countries, it could also pose a particular threat to civilians.

The site also says that sacrificing animals in human battles is not a new idea. During the Cold War, the Soviet Union trained dolphins against human and naval targets, dolphins were trained to intercept enemy divers with harpoons, and killed enemy ships with explosives strapped to their bodies; the United States also trained dolphins for military purposes, although Washington insisted that it did not use dolphins to harm humans, but used to guard naval facilities and use equipment to trap intruders... Other countries are also seeking to use marine mammals in conflict. The history of using animals as weapons dates back to 10th-century China, when monkeys were used to burn enemy camps.
