A: Not a big star, but two conductors.
One of them is Yin Shengshan from the Long Shadow Orchestra.
One is Chen Chuanxi from the Shanghai Film Orchestra.
Among them, the name Yin Shengshan appeared more than 400 times on the screen.
And Chen Chuanxi was even more powerful.
He has conducted more than 600 feature films, documentaries, art films, science and education films and translation films.
No star can have such a "special honor".
Viewers often see their names in the movie's subtitle table.
However, little is known about their behind-the-scenes story. It always felt like they were mysterious.
So it's no exaggeration to call them "the strangers I know best."
So, today, Yaqing would like to tell you about the legendary life of these two "strangers".
One
On May 9, 1925, when Yin Shengshan was born in Ye County, Shandong (present-day Laizhou City), 9-year-old Chen Chuanxi was already a musical prodigy famous in Shuikouguan, Longzhou County, Guangxi.
His father, who was working at the Longzhou County Border Guard Office at the time, would play beautiful music through the accordion in his spare time.
At that time, the other siblings in the family were not interested in music. Only Chen Chuanxi showed a talent that was different from ordinary people.
Whenever the music sounds, he shakes his head and immerses himself in it.
Not only did he learn to play the accordion without a teacher, but at a young age, he also mastered the scales in C major.
This made Father Chen extremely excited.
At the age of 12, Chen Chuanxi entered haiphong Huaqiao Middle School.
The school attaches great importance to music education and has also purchased brass instruments for students to practice. This made Chen Chuanxi feel like a fish.
In 1934, Professor Ying Xiangneng of the Shanghai National Music College led the graduating class to a concert in Guangxi.
The performance of one of them, Ding Shande (who later became a famous composer), left a very deep impression on Chen Chuanxi.
Although Ding Shande is about the same age as Chen Chuanxi, his piano solo and pipa solo are both calm and sophisticated. Chen Chuanxi was drunk.
Chen Chuanxi also wanted to become a student at the Shanghai National College of Music, but the high tuition fees discouraged him.
However, perhaps God favored this young man with musical talent, and this year, an unexpected news reached his ears.
Shanghai National Music College will recruit examiners in Guangxi Province (that is, today's free students).
Chen Chuanxi's heart was overjoyed when he heard this.
Therefore, although he has been admitted to Guangxi University, he still resolutely chose to enter the Shanghai Music College.
Shanghainese music is designed for 19-year-old Chen Chuanxi, opening a door to music.
At that time, there were more than 20 official students who were admitted to the Shanghai Music College from remote provinces.
But the only one who persevered until graduation and achieved excellent results was Chen Chuanxi.
After the outbreak of the War of Resistance Against Japan, Chen Chuanxi and his classmates had an extremely difficult life. But he still did not give up classes and practice.
In addition, he and Li Delun and several other students jointly formed the "China Youth Symphony Orchestra".
Chen Chuanxi plays the piano, Lee Delun plays the cello, Han Zhongjie plays the flute, and Ma Sicong plays the violin.
All of them are god-level figures.
In today's parlance, it's a super luxurious lineup.
They used music to express their patriotism and at the same time carried out anti-Japanese propaganda.
Just when Chen Chuanxi became famous in the Shanghai music industry, Yin Shengshan, who was far away in Changchun, northeast China, also formed an indissoluble relationship with music.
He also showed outstanding musical talent from an early age.
At the age of 15, he entered the changchun music school, showed a strong interest in Western instruments, and his playing skills improved rapidly.
Compared with Chen Chuanxi, who has been educated in school, Yin Shengshan is more like a self-taught conductor.
In May 1946, the Chinese People's Liberation Army entered Harbin. At the same time as the troops entered the city, there was also the Lu Yi Cultural and Labor Troupe.
Because he had to rehearse the national opera "The White-Haired Girl" and rehearse the "Yellow River Chorus", the band was not manned enough, so Yin Shengshan, who had studied music, was selected.
Yin Shengshan was very happy and performed well in the performance.
And this performance, the bigger shock that Yin Shengshan got was that he felt the charm of the conductor.
In his heart, he secretly had a strong desire to become an orchestra conductor.
In this year, the Northeast Film Studio moved from Changchun to Xingshan, in urgent need of musical talents, Yin Shengshan did not say a word, he joined this team.
And here, he found the best position in his life.
He not only participated in the creation of the first film orchestra in New China, but also had the honor of becoming the music conductor of the first film factory in New China.
He first recorded music for some documentaries and short feature films. In 1949, he also served as the conductor of the first feature film "Bridge" of the East Film Studio.
Although the professional quality of the orchestra members at that time was uneven, Yin Shengshan greatly improved the overall level of the band through methodical scheduling.
Starting from the movie "Bridge", Yin Shengshan has conducted more than 400 films.
His name appeared on the subtitles of many classic business cards such as "White Haired Girl", "Dong Cunrui", "Five Golden Flowers", "Liu Sanjie", "Visitor on the Iceberg", "Young People in Our Village" and so on.
Although these films have different directors and different stars, the names of the conductors are all Yin Shengshan.
So he became the most familiar name for the audience.
Compared with Yin Shengshan, Chen Chuanxi's debut as a film music conductor is a little later, but he has the potential to be a latecomer.
Beginning in 1958, he conducted more than 600 films.
His name appears on the subtitle table more often, so the audience is more familiar with the three words "Chen Chuanxi".
However, everyone knows far less about him and Yin Shengshan's behind-the-scenes story than those movie stars.
Two
The personalities of Yin Shengshan and Chen Chuanxi are quite different.
Yin Shengshan is a person who can't rub sand in his eyes, and when he encounters people and things that he is not accustomed to, he will speak directly and never bend over backwards, so it is easy to offend people and suffer a lot of losses.
For example, when smelting steel, he found that the iron that everyone had worked so hard to forge could not be used at all. So he said, "It can't be used in vain, it's just a pile of waste." ”
As a result, this word reached the ears of a factory leader, and he became a typical example of "contradicting his superiors".
Just when the factory was reviewing the new film "Liu Sanjie" shot by director Suri, the factory leader did not agree to add Yin Shengshan's name to the film.
The reason is "he is not our man".
After Wang Jiayi directed "Daji and Her Father", the leader was not allowed to add Yin Shengshan's name to the subtitles.
In contrast, Chen Chuanxi's personality is more peaceful and introverted, does not like to compete, and is indifferent to fame and fortune, and seems to be somewhat indisputable from the world.
When he was a student at Huaqiao Middle School, although he was the best oboe player in the school orchestra, he only wanted to play the second place, and he did not compete for the lead.
Later, he became the conductor of the film orchestra, and it was also because his conducting ability and listening ability were outstanding, so he naturally stood on the podium.
However, Yin Shengshan and Chen Chuanxi have one thing in common, that is, they are very forgetful of their work and serious.
Yin Shengshan doesn't seem to have any other hobbies, and his greatest pleasure is watching movies.
And he watches movies, but also for work, thinking about how music can be better integrated with the style, plot, and picture of the movie.
Offstage, he and the orchestra members talked and laughed, but as soon as he stood on the podium, he immediately felt like a changed person.
The look is serious, the command is rigorous, and the spirit is soaring.
Every time he was recording a new film, he always tapped into the film's content first, and then maximized the potential of the band and singing actors.
In a large number of practices, he gradually formed a thick, simple, rigorous and solemn command style. Loved by the audience.
In his later years, the shooting task of the long film studio was relatively heavy, and although Yin Shengshan was older and his physical condition was not as good as before, he still insisted on taking the illness to the podium and recording for one movie after another.
Many viewers could not understand the word "conductor".
What exactly does a "conductor" do? Could it be that he took a small wooden stick and waved it around?
It looks very relaxed and casual.
In the face of everyone's questions, Yin Shengshan has his own in-depth and simple explanation: the conductor is the voice played by all the members of the orchestra, organized into a song.
Without a conductor, the orchestra's performance is likely to be a mess.
For Chen Chuanxi, who came from a science class, the conductor is more like the soul of the orchestra.
Its role, similar to that of the director of a film, controls the overall situation.
He doesn't play the instrument himself, but he can make the whole band play the most beautiful pieces.
When Chen Chuanxi first entered the Shanghai Film Orchestra, there were several film studios in Shanghai, such as Tianma, Haiyan, Jiangnan, and Meiying, and the soundtrack work was completed by the Shanghai Film Orchestra, and the conductor was almost all Chen Chuanxi.
The degree of busyness of its work can be imagined.
Yet he never slackened off.
Working all night is almost routine.
So much so that his son Chen Jiaju, in the process of growing up, often could not see the figure of his father.
In the music industry, Chen Chuanxi has the reputation of "the conductor's stopwatch".
His unusually sharp fixed-tone hearing allows him to present unexpectedly wonderful effects in the course of film scoring.
In addition to scoring for domestic films, he also had to record some lost music from foreign films.
It was an extremely difficult task, but Chen Chuanxi's "tinkering" was seamless.
For example, when the translation factory dubbed films such as "Jane Eyre" and "Notre Dame de Paris", due to the limited technical conditions at that time, it was impossible to make multi-track recordings. To dub, you have to erase all the original dialogue and music.
This requires Chen Chuanxi to re-score the soundtrack.
To this end, he continued to watch the original film until he knew the direction and change of the music, including the layout and voice parts.
It is then assigned to various instruments and parts, so as to be integrated with the music of the original film.
When you watch these movies, you must not hear which music is the original film and which music is re-recorded, right?
When the episode "Who Doesn't Say My Hometown Is Good" was recorded for the movie "Red Sun", it was already produced. However, I suddenly received a notice to change the lyrics.
Re-recording, not only to match the length of the song, but also to correspond to the actor's mouth shape, the difficulty can be imagined. However, Chen Chuanxi relied on his profound skill to do it in one go.
Since he was transferred to the Shanghai Film Orchestra in 1958, Chen Chuanxi has been working in the world of light and shadow for 40 years.
Which films did he conduct over the years?
The list goes on and on.
Among them are not only films from the Upper Film Studio, but also works by brother factories.
The more famous ones are - "Red Detachment of Women", "Soldier No. 51 Station", "Today I Rest", "Red Sun", "Ashima", "Stage Sisters", "Bitter Cauliflower", "Fight against invaders", "Love of the Sea", "Long Live Youth" and other classic masterpieces.
And these are just the tip of the iceberg.
Three
Yin Shengshan and Chen Chuanxi are very simple in life and very approachable.
They all have the simple, persistent qualities that are characteristic of artists.
Yin Shengshan's wife, named Zhao Liqiu, is a flute player in the former Long Shadow Orchestra.
The two were very affectionate after marriage. Have the same hobbies and complement each other's personalities.
Every Friday of that year, the studio would show one or two movies for the whole factory staff to observe. Yin Shengshan and Zhao Liqiu are always the most active audiences.
Sometimes the whole movie is just watched by the couple.
After Yin Shengshan left in 1988, he could not stay idle. Neighbors around him often see him carrying a black leatherette bag to the market to buy vegetables.
It's no different from an ordinary old man.
No one knows that he is the conductor who appears most often on movie subtitles.
Later, when he was older, he still went to buy vegetables, but he had an extra crutch in his hand.
He was immersed in the ocean of music all his life and was familiar with musical notes, but in life, he was a "Ma Daha".
Zhao Liqiu let him go out to buy things, he always lost everything, either he didn't remember to find change, or he forgot the items.
Once, Zhao Liqiu gave him 5 cents, asked him to buy cigarettes, and repeatedly instructed, a package of large front door 3 mao 6, do not forget to bring back the remaining 1 mao 4. Yin Shengshan remembered. After returning, he happily handed 1 Mao 4 to Zhao Liqiu, but the smoke was forgotten on the counter.
Such situations occur from time to time, often making Zhao Liqiu laugh.
Chen Chuanxi's wife, named Shao Naikai, is a big girl, and her father is Shao Piaoping, the founder of the Beijing Daily.
When Shao Naikai was studying at the First Girls' Middle School in Beiping City, He had two good classmates, Han Dechang and Xia Chengyu. Later, both of them were admitted to the Shanghai Music College and became classmates with Chen Chuanxi.
I think that perhaps it is precisely because of this relationship that Shao Naikai met Chen Chuanxi and fell in love, and the two were happily married.
Chen Chuanxi is also a person who has no quarrels in life, and is not good at human affection and sophistication, and his only hobby is music.
However, the achievements of Yin Shengshan and Chen Chuanxi in Chinese film music are obvious to all.
In 1996, Yin Shengshan was awarded the "Cradle Cup of New Chinese Cinema". In 2005, he won the Lifetime Achievement Award of the Golden Bell Award for Chinese Music.
In June 2005, Chen Chuanxi also won the "Special Contribution Award for Contemporary Chinese Film Music" at the "Celebration of Contemporary Chinese Film Music commemorating the Centenary of Chinese Cinema".
After their retirement, both of them actively participated in the activities of the elderly orchestra, presenting one wonderful performance after another for the audience.
On September 27, 2011, Yin Shengshan, a famous film music conductor in mainland China, died of a heart attack and quietly left this world at the age of 86.
Less than half a year later, on January 27, 2012, Chen Chuanxi, another famous film music conductor in the mainland, also died of illness in Shanghai at the age of 96.
These two old men, they are not familiar to the audience, but their names appear most often on the Chinese movie screen.
