"My Extraordinary Parents" is a warm family film that focuses on the vulnerable. Overall, the final effect of this film based on the director's real experience may only be called a qualified "youth memoir", and the emotional touch brought to the audience is not much.
The film tells the story of Zhu Zhixin (Wu Qianyu), who has a pair of bright eyes, but there are a pair of blind parents Gan Xiaohong (Hui Yinghong) and Zhu Guoqiang (Wu Dairong). Well-behaved and sensible, she has become the "eye" of her parents since she was a child, depicting the shapes and colors of the world for her parents. With the arrival of girls' puberty, the two generations gradually developed a generational gap, torturing each other but protecting each other. On one side is the love of the parents with all their strength, and on the other side is the irrepressible anger of the daughter, and the two generations present a complex situation of intimacy but estrangement.
The film is based on the real experience of director Zhu Fengxian, but this does not make the film more sincere, one of the reasons is that the concentration of sensationalism is too high, and the technique is somewhat deliberate: flashbacks and slow motions appear every ten minutes, which not only consume the appeal of the real story itself, but also make the script arrangement appear to be somewhat "routine". The whole film is basically only supported by Hui Yinghong's acting skills, and as another pole of contradiction in the film, Wu Qianyu, who plays his daughter, is "hanging" by Hui Yinghong, and his performance in several emotional explosion scenes is quite "crotch".

In the film, Hui Yinghong's interpretation of the blind life is very in place, and the treatment of several details is more worthy of "conveying the gods". For example, the daughter did not dare to recognize her mother standing at the school gate, and the moment she covered the bell and walked in front of her classmates in front of her mother, the mother's heartache and loss were moving. Unfortunately, in the absence of powerful opponent actors, Hui Yinghong's interpretation has become a slightly vicious "one-man show", lacking the arc of the character, and it will feel tired after watching more.
Compared with the performance, the bigger problem of this film may lie in the character shaping, not only the psychological transformation of the two protagonists of the mother and daughter, the lack of logic in the behavior motivation, the father played by Wu Dairong and the art teacher played by Chen Belle are cut all the way from the supporting role to the "tool man", the former gag and joke forced to fill the dialogue, the latter expressionless chicken soup like a god guiding the way. In short, the other characters in this film have been "castrated" in the script creation stage, and relying on Hui Yinghong's performance to support the scene may be a helpless choice.

Some people say that "My Extraordinary Parents" is like pizza, with everything but nothing refined. I might as well say it more harshly – without Hui Yinghong's performance as the main source of cheese, the story background of the film may be just a pizza base, tasteless and discarded.
However, the film's performance of vulnerable groups still deserves some praise. Some small details in the film reflect the sincerity of the director, which not only allows the audience to see the difficulty of life of the visually impaired, but also does not make the perception become pure pity or sympathy. The portrayal of family affection in the film is also very real: the mother who is too controlling and suffocating, the rebellious daughter of adolescence, is not uncommon in life, and it is full of emotional tension in the context of the story of "blind family".
