Noah Baumbach's new film "White Noise" was selected as the opening film of this year's Venice Film Festival. Also shortlisted in the main competition section were the blockbuster works of martin MacDonald, Jafa Panasi, Florian Zeller, Koji Fukada and many other directors.

A total of 23 films were shortlisted in this year's main competition, with 7 in the United States and 5 in France. In Asia, there are 2 iranian departments and 1 Japanese department.

Unfortunately, in the main competition unit, there are still no Chinese films shortlisted this year, and "Hidden in the Dust" shortlisted for the main competition of the Berlin Film Festival has become the only seedling of the three main themes of Chinese in Europe this year.

A Chinese short film in the Venice Short Film Competition was shortlisted, called "Please Don't Hang Up", which is the work of Malaysian director Ce Ding TAN.

At present, the only Chinese-language feature film, director Yang Dechang's classic film "Independent Times" was selected for the classic unit of the 79th Venice Film Festival, and was shortlisted for the main competition unit of the 47th Cannes International Film Festival in 1994. The film was restored in 4K by a taiwanese team with the authorization of Yang Dechang's widow, Ms. Peng Kaili, and will hold a world premiere during the Venice Film Festival.

Going back to the last time Chinese films had the strongest sense of existence in Water City, we must go back to before the epidemic.

In 2019, "Lyceum Theatre", directed by Lou Ye and starring Gong Li, was shortlisted for the main competition unit. In 2020, Jia Zhangke's "More Than Endless" produced by Jia Zhangke and starring Bai Ke was shortlisted for the horizon unit. In 2021, Taiwanese director Zhong Menghong's "Waterfall" was selected for the Horizon unit.

What kind of movies can we see on the big screen? Let's take a look at the hot entries worth paying attention to in this year's main competition!

How do contemporary American families face death and uncertainty?

"White Noise" directed by Noah Baumbach was selected as the opening film of this year's Venice International Film Festival, and it is also the first film to be officially announced to be shortlisted for the main competition of this year. This is also the film that Baumbach has partnered with Netflix to enter the Venice Film Festival after "Marriage Story".

Adam Dreifer and Greta Gerweger play a middle-class couple in the film. A catastrophic train accident spills chemical waste all over their town, and life is shrouded in a deadly black chemical cloud.

The story is based on Don DeLillo's best-selling novel of the same name, written in the 1980s, won the National Book Award in the United States, and is hailed as the most classic masterpiece of American postmodernist literature. In the book, the author predicted the possible harm caused by chemicals to the environment, as well as the threats and fears that technological developments will bring to the future of human civilization. How the director injects the mood of the times into the film is looking forward to.

This film is the second part of the "family trilogy" directed by Florian Zeller, "The Son Trapped in the Heart", and the director will work with Christopher Hampton, the screenwriter partner of "Father Trapped in Time".

The film is still based on his play of the same name, which tells the story of Peter (Jackman) and his new partner Emma (Kirby) and their children living a busy life. When his ex-wife Kate (Dunn) shows up with their teenage son, Peter's life is thrown into chaos. In contrast, "Father" uses artistic expression to record Alzheimer's irreversible damage to twilight years, while "Son" focuses on the impact and impact of adolescent depression on family relations.

Iñárritu, known as one of Mexico's three masters, returned to Mexico after a gap of 11 years, focusing on the social problems of his homeland. Written by Iñárritu's longtime partner Nicholas Gakoporn, the script is very Latin American in terms of synopsis. The protagonist is a well-known Mexican journalist and documentary filmmaker who returns to his homeland years later to witness how he struggled with the crisis, how he faced his identity, family relationships, and his silly personal memories, looking back at Mexico's past and present.

With the same way the name of the director's 2014 masterpiece Birdman, will this nostalgic comedy become a legend of the many awards/nominations like the other works of the Academy Award-winning director?

Moses has always been gentle, selfless and willing to give to his family. His brother Ryad is the opposite of him, a well-known television presenter who is often criticized by those around him for being selfish. Only Moussa defended him, and he had great admiration for his brother. One day, Moses fell and hit his head hard. After the head injury, he completely changed into a person, and he eventually fell out with everyone except Ryad, who spoke unabashedly.

Acting and directing is very suitable for describing Roshdi Zem, who has won the Cannes film emperor and Caesar film emperor, and the plot seems to be the french's best family comedy. Another male protagonist, Semi Boyagira, co-starred with Zem in "The Years of Common Glory", and also won the Cannes Film Emperor for this film.

This is the second collaboration between Luca Guadagnino and Sweet Tea after "Call Me By Your Name". It is also a novel adaptation, and the original work of this film is not lost. The heroine tries to find her father, whom she has never met, to understand the story of why she desires to kill and eat the person she loves. Most road movies are about finding themselves, and this film is still inseparable even if it is coated with the shell of horror and love. But since the director can adapt a slightly regrettable same-sex romance novel into a film about love and growth that moves everyone, it is inevitable that people can't help but look forward to the presentation of "Bones and All".

Adapted from the best-selling book by Joyce Carol Oates, the film boldly reinterprets the life trajectory of one of Hollywood's eternal idols, Marilyn Monroe. The story depicts her turbulent childhood, phenomenal fame and her lamentable love story. The work blurs the line between fact and fiction, exploring the widening separation between her public and private selves.

The combination of talented independent director Andrew Dominic and Marilyn Monroe made the film attract a lot of attention from the beginning of casting, and finally starred The Cuban actor Anna de Armas, who performed well in "Blade Out of the Sheath". From cass, director, screenwriter to the topicality of the work itself, it's hard to come up with a reason not to watch the film.

Tilda Swinton filmed the ghost feature film in Wales during the pandemic and is working with director Joanna Hogg for the second time after Memorabilia. The film tells the story of a middle-aged woman and an elderly mother who return to their old manor house, which has now become an empty hotel, full of mysteries, and the mother and daughter will have to face some secrets that have been buried for a long time.

Hogg's work has focused on middle-class family relationships in Britain. This film is her first attempt at the field of thrillers, but since the producer is A24, we have reason to believe its consistent vision.
