Manchester United vs Liverpool: Toxic emotions, witch curses and unwinnables – everything you need to know

Manchester United and Liverpool are two of England's most successful clubs after they were crowned league champions 39 times.

But when fierce rivals meet at Old Trafford on Monday night, both will be looking for their first win after a disappointing start to the season.

Liverpool have yet to take the lead after their opening games against Fulham and Crystal Palace, while Jurgen Klopp has had to face injuries and red cards to sign a £64m darwin Nunez with a new signing.

United lost their first two games under Erik ten Hag, including a humiliating 4-0 defeat at Brentford.

After losing the last two games of the 2021-22 season under interim manager Ralf Rangnick, United hope to avoid a fifth consecutive league defeat for the first time since seven league games from January to March 1972.

Disgruntled United fans plan to hold a new protest "failed ownership" in the Glenzes team before kick-off, both on and off the pitch, which is destined to be a lively night.

Will Liverpool start the season at Old Trafford?

If Liverpool's recent squad against Manchester United in the Premier League is worth mentioning, then this game is timely for Klopp's side as they look to start their season.

The Red Devils are unbeaten in their last eight top-flight games against Manchester United, scoring 18 points from 24 points.

In fact, since United last beat their league rivals in March 2018, they have sacked two managers (Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer), appointed a caretaker (Michael Carrick), appointed an interim manager (Ralph Rangnick) and appointed another permanent manager [Ten Hag].

Liverpool have scored 13 goals in their last three games and nine were unresponsive in two games last season.

When Klopp's side beat United 5-0 in the corresponding match last season, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer went on for another four games before being sacked.

Egyptian striker Mohammed Salah has scored six goals in his last three games against Manchester United.

Mohammed Salah scored nine goals against Manchester United and could become the first Liverpool player to reach double digits against an opponent.

Liverpool are looking to win four consecutive league games against Manchester United for the first time since January 2002 and three consecutive league games in the league for the first time.

For Klopp, the concern is that his side have dropped four points in the first two games of the season, with Liverpool conceding the first goal in their last six league games.

Will they stop this trend at Old Trafford?

Ronaldo rioted and terrible form

When United played liverpool at home last October, the atmosphere was gloomy after their previous Premier League game ended in a 4-2 loss to Leicester City.

Ten months later, Liverpool are back at Old Trafford and will coincide with the dissatisfaction that fans have shown again after brentford's 4-0 defeat.

Brentford's defeat prompted the United Fan Trust to issue a strong statement on the way the club operates.

"As we've always said, a fish rots from its head. The ultimate responsibility for the terrible condition of our football club must be borne by the Grizers family, its owners," it wrote.

United brought in Argentine defender Lisandro Martinez from Ajax for a deal worth up to £57m, Dutch defender Terrell Malaysia brought in Tyrell Márcia from Feyenoord for £14.7 million, and Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen has been in free form since finishing sixth last season.

They also struck a deal to sign Real Madrid's Brazilian midfielder Casemiro, a deal worth around £70m.

But their dire form last season has spread, with United scoring just four points in a possible 24-game game - one win, one draw and six defeats - as Cristiano Ronaldo scored a hat-trick in a 3-2 win over relegated Norwich on April 16.

Ten Hag said: "They just need to deliver. It is my obligation, and it is their obligation. When I talk about the players, I want to emphasize that I'm also in the same boat. When our attitude is not right, I am not so right. We win together, we lose together.

Ronaldo's absence from most of United's pre-season has sparked speculation about his future as he also missed out on the club's pre-season training at Carrington.

Manchester United boss Eric Ten Haag insists Cristiano Ronaldo "does not sell"

He played the game against Brentford, coming off the bench in a 2-1 home win over Brighton.

Ronaldo announced in the run-up to liverpool that after reading so many "lies" this summer, he will soon reveal the "truth" of his future.

Will the Portuguese striker inspire Manchester United to play against the Red Devils as Ten Haag wants to avoid becoming the second Manchester United manager to lose every of his first three games in charge of the club, after John Chapman in 1921?

"Do we have witches in the building?"

While it's important to recognise that the season is still in its infancy, Liverpool need to win after conceding four points in two games.

They will have to get it without Nunez, who was suspended after last Monday's 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace for a red card for Joachim Anderson.

"It's important that we all recognise that we are doing 'work in progress' with Darwin – he himself recognises that," Klopp said when Liverpool announced the signing of the Benfica striker in June.

Núñez, 23, will also miss home games against Bournemouth on 27 August and against Newcastle on 31 August.

Klopp was "proud" after the draw, although Nunez sent him away

It was a setback for Klopp, who left several players due to injury, including Thiago Alcantara (thigh), Diogo Jota (thigh), Curtis Jones (calf), Joel Matip (groin), Roberto Firmino (foot), Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (thigh) and Ibrahima Conat (knee).

"We had a very tricky week," Klopp said. "Every day someone pulls up and you think 'what's going on – do we have witches in the building?' ”

"Manchester United are in poor shape"

Simon Stone, BBC Sports

Two seasons ago, the match had to be postponed when fans entered the stadium as protests against the Glazer family escalated far beyond the safety set up to deal with it.

Given that United are unbeaten in 13 games on the road to second place in the Premier League – and have also reached the Europa League final, it's no wonder there are concerns about this particular resumption.

United haven't been in as bad form as they are now for almost 50 years, when they were actually relegated from the top flight.

Organizers have unveiled pre-match protests. It's hard to imagine that attendance can be high on weekday nights during the holiday season.

As a club, United need the protests to be peaceful, but there will be a lot of nervous people before the game actually starts.
