Europe has been hit by heat waves this summer, with temperatures reaching record highs in many locations, further accelerating glacier melting. The volume of Alpine glaciers has reportedly shrunk by about 60 percent since 1850. As a result, half of Switzerland's 1,500 Alpine glaciers will disappear within the next 30 years.
Christopher Meier, a glaciologist at the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities in Germany, speculates that glaciers across the Entire Alps may be melting by about 50 percent more this year than in previous years.
