Early life
James McAvoy was born in 1979 in Glasgow, Scotland, England. The son of a psychiatric nurse whose parents divorced when he was 7 years old and whose mother was in poor health, he was later sent to the Delacup area near Glasgow to live with his maternal grandparents. McAvoy's mother lived with them intermittently for a while.
McAvoy attended St Thomas Aquinas Catholic Secondary School in Glasgow and considered becoming a priest. In a 2006 interview, McAvoy said he wanted to be a priest as a child and explore the world through missionary work. During his school days, he worked in a local bakery.
McAvoy applied to join the Royal Navy and has enlisted in the Army, and he has also been given the opportunity to study acting at the Royal Scottish College of Music and Drama. After graduating in 2000, he moved to London.
Acting career
X-Men: First Battle, Split, Wanted
McAvoy made his debut in 1995's Next Room, and in 2003 he began his career as a feature film, including the famous thriller Political Clouds and the sci-fi miniseries Dune Castle.
He has performed in several productions in London's West End, received a Lawrence Olivier Award nomination for Best Actor, and voiced animated films Ginomyo and Juliet, Naughty Detective and Arthur Christmas.
In 2003, McAvoy starred in Bollywood Queen; In 2004, he starred in "The Dance of Life". In 2005, he played the sheep monster Mr. Tumnus in The Legend of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Magic Wardrobe. His performance in Kevin Macdonald's film The Last Dictatorship (2006) earned him several award nominations, including the BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actor. The critically acclaimed love war film Atonement (2007) earned him a Golden Globe nomination and his second British Academy Film Award nomination. He later played a novice assassin in the action thriller Wanted (2008).

In 2011, McAvoy played Professor Charles Xavier in the superhero film X-Men: First Battle, a role he played in X-Men: The Future Against The Corner (2014), X-Men: Apocalypse (2016), Deadpool 2 (2018), and Dark Phoenix (2019).
McAvoy later starred in the crime comedy film Filth (2013), for which he won the British Independent Film Award for Best Actor. In 2016, he played Kevin Wendell Cram in Nate Shyamalan's Split, a man with 23 different personalities that earned critical acclaim and later played the role again in Mr. Glass. Since 2019, he has been playing Lord Asriel Belacqua in the magic drama Dark Matter.
Personal life
During the filming of Shameless, McAvoy began a relationship with Anne-Marie Duff and married in November 2006. They have a son. In May 2016, the couple announced their divorce decision.
Since 2017, McAvoy has been dating Lisa Liberati, an American production assistant he met on the set of Split.
After McAvoy won the Baccavoy Award for "Rising Star", his estranged father told the Sunday Mirror that he would love to get in touch with his son but didn't know how to contact him. Although he hadn't read the article, McAvoy heard about it and ignored it.
In a 2011 interview with Sky News, McAvoy said he believed British filmmakers were disparaging and simplifying their work in order to please American audiences. He has previously called 3D movies a "waste of money" and accused studios of using the effect to get more money from moviegoers.
