"Panda Village" is on fire! Last winter, a video of villagers encountering giant pandas on their way home in Ya'an City, Sichuan Province, exploded on the Internet, reaching one million views in two hours. The construction of the Giant Panda National Park has also attracted much attention.
Since Sichuan launched the pilot project of the giant panda national park system in 2017, the Sichuan Bureau of Surveying, Mapping and Geoinformatics has actively participated in the construction of the giant panda national park, exploring from the aspects of technology and methods, and providing important services for the natural resource management and remote sensing monitoring of the giant panda national park.

Service Giant Panda National Park boundary demarcation
In January 2017, the "Giant Panda National Park System Pilot Program" (hereinafter referred to as the "Plan") was officially issued. The "Plan" organically integrates more than 80 protected areas with high-density wild giant panda populations, major habitats of giant pandas, and genetic exchange corridors of giant panda local populations in Sichuan, Shaanxi and Gansu provinces into national parks, with a total area of 27,134 square kilometers. Among them, Sichuan covers an area of 20,177 square kilometers, accounting for about 74% of the total area of the national park, mainly involving 7 cities and prefectures of Mianyang, Guangyuan, Chengdu, Deyang, Aba, Ya'an and Meishan.
In October 2017, the Sixth Topographic Survey Team of the Ministry of Natural Resources was entrusted by the Office of the Leading Group for the Promotion of the Pilot Work of the Giant Panda National Park System in Sichuan Province to carry out the survey and mapping service of the Giant Panda National Park in Sichuan Province, and completed the tasks of border paper map production, field survey survey, geographic information data processing, and boundary refinement required for the boundary map.
"In the past, people only knew that the mountain was classified as a giant panda national park, but it was not clear where the specific boundaries were." Wu Si, head of the production section of the Sixth Topographic Survey Team of the Ministry of Natural Resources, said that this has undoubtedly brought difficulties to the construction and daily supervision of the Giant Panda National Park.
In December 2019, the Sixth Topographic Survey Team of the Ministry of Natural Resources cooperated with the Sichuan Wildlife Resources Survey and Protection Station to complete the piling of the giant panda national park in Mianyang Anzhou District, one of the first pilot counties in Sichuan, and hongya County in Meishan City. Wu Si and his teammates conducted on-site surveys here, determined the location of boundary piles, and carried out boundary pile burial and measurement work in strict accordance with standards. One after another, about 500 meters apart, the boundary pillars have drawn precise boundaries for this giant panda national park.
The Sixth Topographic Survey Team of the Ministry of Natural Resources has also established a boundary pile database on this basis, which provides a data basis for the editing and management, dynamic update, visual display, and statistical calculation of boundary pile data in the Giant Panda National Park.

Provide data support for the construction of giant panda national park
In recent years, the population of giant pandas has gradually increased, and the habitat suitable for giant pandas has been expanding. According to the data of the Fourth National Giant Panda Field Survey, there are 1340 wild giant pandas within the scope of the Giant Panda National Park, accounting for 71.89% of the entire wild giant panda population.
"The purpose of establishing the Giant Panda National Park is to solve the problem of segregation of giant panda populations and habitat connectivity." Wu Si introduced that the state has spatially broken the restrictions of administrative divisions and included 9 cities (prefectures) and 23 counties (cities, districts) of Sichuan, Shaanxi and Gansu provinces with dense areas of wild giant pandas into the scope of national parks, with the purpose of achieving unified protection across regions.
The boundaries of the Giant Panda National Park (Sichuan) have been demarcated, but the specific conditions of natural resources, biological species, ecosystems, human activities in the park, as well as the integration and management of protected areas, have become urgent problems to be solved in front of the construction of the Giant Panda National Park.
"After completing the defining pile, it is necessary to find out the natural and humanistic background in the Giant Panda National Park." Wu Si said that the giant panda national park is an important type of national nature reserve, and the primary function is to protect the integrity and authenticity of the natural ecosystem of the giant panda and its habitat, comprehensively find out the natural and human geography elements in the giant panda national park, and timely grasp the current situation and change information of natural elements such as cultivated land, woodland, grassland, and construction land, which is of great significance to the construction of the giant panda national park.
In May this year, the Sixth Topographic Survey Team of the Ministry of Natural Resources used the technical methods and ideas precipitated in the previous monitoring work, combined with the 2020 national land change survey data, the 2021 national land utilization dynamic full coverage remote sensing monitoring data and related thematic data, in view of the natural resource characteristics and protection priorities of the region, using spatial analysis, statistical analysis, geographical related analysis and other methods. Monitoring of the development and utilization of natural resources and monitoring of natural resource conservation and restoration in the Giant Panda National Park (Sichuan) with an area of more than 20,000 square kilometers was carried out.
The monitoring work began from the two aspects of the basic status of natural resources and the change of natural resources, and finally formed a remote sensing monitoring report on natural resources in the Giant Panda National Park (Sichuan), which provided data support and guarantee for the timely adjustment of construction and conservation management decisions, the scientific standardization of resource utilization, and the coordinated and effective development of giant panda protection work.
R&D platform
Serve the intelligent management of the construction of giant panda national park
In order to achieve the efficient use of the results of the defined pile data, improve the intelligent, informatization and visual management level of the calibration information of the Giant Panda National Park, and better serve the nature conservation work of the Giant Panda National Park, the Sixth Topographic Survey Team of the Ministry of Natural Resources has also developed the intelligent management platform of the Giant Panda National Park (Sichuan).
At the Geographical National Conditions Monitoring Center of the Sixth Topographic Survey Team of the Ministry of Natural Resources, Wu Si introduced the intelligent management platform of giant panda national park (Sichuan) on the computer, which includes user management module, thematic map display module, database management module and national park supervision module, which realizes two-dimensional and three-dimensional integration of data visualization and intelligent management, and provides information support for the intelligent management of giant panda national park (Sichuan).
"In April this year, we jointly launched the construction of the ecological management platform of the Giant Panda National Park (Aba) together with the Aba Management Branch of the Giant Panda National Park." Sun Jingjie, assistant director of the Sichuan Basic Geographic Information Center of the Ministry of Natural Resources, told reporters.
According to the construction needs of the Giant Panda National Park, the Sichuan Basic Geographic Information Center of the Ministry of Natural Resources has developed a three-dimensional geographic information platform for the ecological management of the Giant Panda National Park by using satellite remote sensing, Beidou navigation, spatio-temporal big data, geographic information system, three-dimensional visualization and other technical means, and delivered it to the Aba Management Branch of the Sichuan Giant Panda National Park, providing data and information support for the survey and demarcation of the Aba area of the Giant Panda National Park, daily patrol, ecological monitoring, and environmental protection law enforcement.
It is understood that in the future, the Sichuan Bureau of Surveying, Mapping and Geoinformation will also invest more surveying and mapping forces to continue to serve the construction of the Giant Panda National Park. With the continuous investment of more forces, the Giant Panda National Park will be built better and better, and the chances of people encountering giant pandas in the park will become higher and higher.
