The smallest bird in the world, the hummingbird

Hummingbirds are the smallest birds in the world, yes! Small enough to sit comfortably on your little fingertips.

How do hummingbirds get food?

They have a long, thin and slender beak with a narrow, transparent tip of the tongue inside the beak. The tongue is used to suck up nectar/hummingbird water, just like a butterfly.

Of course, they can't survive on sugar alone. They eat small bugs, such as mosquitoes (i.e. mosquitoes). They may hover over areas with mosquitoes, swoop down, and quickly open their beaks to eat some bugs.

Some netizens asked a strange question

Will hummingbirds die if they don't fly?

No. No, it won't. How do you think they sleep? They inhabit, nest and so on like other birds. If you have patience, put some nectar in the cap of the bottle and hold it in the palm of your hand. You can usually get them to fall on your hands. But beware! Once the hummingbirds start feeding them, you can't stop or you'll hear a whole bunch of angry chirping. Hahahaha. Twittering crooked.

Hummingbirds can be quite aggressive. So when feeding a large flock of hummingbirds, please pay attention to safety.

While hummingbirds are adept at hiding from predators by other birds, they have an important natural predator: praying mantises. After reaching adult size in the fall, female praying mantises move toward the flowers that pollinators most often visit. Here, they are almost completely disguised, waiting for unsuspecting pollinators to visit the flowers for nectar.

If the unsuspecting pollinator happens to be a hummingbird, the praying mantis will quickly pierce the hummingbird with its forearm and then leisurely enjoy fresh bird meat for a meal.

Hummingbirds feed on other insects such as larger dragonflies and robber flies. They often catch birds in flight or at feeding, and tend to smother the bird's wings with their own wings until they are able to issue a fatal bite. They either feed on the bird in this place or take it to a hidden place — even though the hummingbird may weigh twice as much as a dragonfly. Finally, some bees and wasps will kill hummingbirds if their interactions are belligerent. Usually in this case, both opponents will be killed in the process.

The natural mammalian predators of hummingbirds are domestic cats or smaller wild cats (ocelots, bobcats, etc.) and squirrels. Spiders are another source of predators. Although hummingbirds use spider silk to build their nests, they are sometimes entangled in spider silk, which instead provides the spider with delicious food.

Birds may also be important predators for hummingbirds – notably eagles, crows, etc. – although owls generally feed on them after dark.

Other vertebrates that feed on hummingbirds are frogs (bullfrogs, green frogs, and even leopard frogs), fish, lizards and snakes. While lizards feed primarily on adult birds, snakes also feed on adult birds (caught in feeding areas and rest areas) young birds or eggs – usually after adult birds have flown away in search of their own food.

It's a tough life for hummingbirds. When they are not attacked by predators, members of their own species will chase away invaders at preferred feeding locations, and males will fight invading males to the death to protect their homes.
