155% surge! Monkeypox "worries" spike, the White House sudden warning! Are there multiple mechanisms of transmission? The multinational prevention and control upgrade, Japan found the first case, how big the impact?

author:Securities Times

WHO sounded the alarm, and the market was momentarily agitated.

Following WHO's highest-level alert for monkeypox outbreaks, several countries have escalated their response policies. Among them, the White House is considering whether to declare monkeypox a public health emergency; Japan issued a Risk Alert for a Grade 1 infectious disease on 25 July, and japan found its first confirmed case of monkeypox on the same day; On July 25, the General Administration of Customs of China also issued the Announcement on Preventing the Introduction of Monkeypox Epidemics into the Mainland. On the same day, Wu Zunyou, chief expert of epidemiology at the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, said that the monkeypox epidemic will not cause a large-scale epidemic in the mainland.

In the face of this wave of monkeypox epidemic, the capital market has also been restless again. U.S. monkeypox concept stocks rose sharply, With Tonix Pharmaceutical Holdings soaring more than 45% in a single day, SIGA Technology soaring by more than 29%, and Chimerix's intraday highest gain of more than 24%; Boosted by strong demand for vaccines, Bavaria Nordic's share price has soared, with a cumulative increase of more than 155% since May 1. In addition, on July 25, A-share monkeypox concept stocks also collectively strengthened sharply, and the Wind monkeypox index rose by more than 5%.

At present, the transmission of monkeypox virus is one of the focuses of attention of all parties. On July 24, local time, Dr. Anne Rimoyn, a professor of epidemiology at the University of California, warned that monkeypox viruses have "multiple transmission mechanisms" and can be transmitted in many different ways. Dr. Rimoin has been studying monkeypox viruses in Africa for 20 years, so this warning has attracted market attention.

Global tensions

An official announcement by the World Health Organization (WHO) has sparked global tensions.

On July 23, local time, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus declared that the monkeypox outbreak in multiple countries constituted a "public health emergency of international concern". This is THE HIGHEST LEVEL OF ALERT ISSUED BY WHO, WITH MORE THAN 16,000 CONFIRMED CASES OF MONKEYPOX AND 5 DEATHS HAVE BEEN REPORTED IN 75 countries and territories worldwide since 2022.

WHO assesses that monkeypox outbreaks are at medium risk outside Europe and high risk in Europe.

After the release of this alert, many countries have successively upgraded their prevention and control policies for the monkeypox epidemic. The first is the White House, on July 24, local time, the White House COVID-19 response coordinator Ashsh Jeha said that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is considering whether to declare monkeypox a public health emergency if the current management strategy cannot control the virus.

Once a monkeypox outbreak is declared a public health emergency, the U.S. department of health can mobilize federal financial assistance to respond to the outbreak.

Jeha praised WHO for elevating monkeypox to the highest level of alert, arguing that in many, many parts of the world, monkeypox outbreaks are out of control.

According to the latest data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the number of confirmed cases of monkeypox in the United States is rising sharply, in the week from July 11 to 16, the number of confirmed or suspected monkeypox cases increased by more than 100%, as of July 22, the existing confirmed cases of monkeypox in the United States reached 2891, in addition to Alaska, Montana, Wyoming, Mississippi, Vermont, Maine six states, the other 44 states and the capital Washington have found confirmed cases.

In addition, Japan has also upgraded its risk level. On July 25, Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a Level 1 infectious disease risk alert for overseas travel, reminding people to pay attention to the risk of infection when going overseas, covering the whole world. This level is the lowest of the 4 hint levels.

It is worth vigilance that the first confirmed case of monkeypox in Japan was found on the same day, and the infected person was confirmed in Tokyo, Japan.

In addition, the General Administration of Customs of China also issued the "Announcement on Preventing the Introduction of Monkeypox Epidemics into the Mainland" on July 25, which clearly states that personnel from countries where monkeypox outbreaks occur, such as those who have been exposed to monkeypox cases or have symptoms such as fever, headache, muscle soreness, back pain, lymphadenopathy, and large-scale rashes on the face and body, should take the initiative to declare to the Customs when entering the country, and the customs health and quarantine personnel will take medical measures and carry out sampling and testing in accordance with the prescribed procedures.

On July 25, Wu Zunyou, chief epidemiologist of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, posted that judging from the population and transmission methods of monkeypox in Europe and the United States, it is only a matter of time before monkeypox spreads to Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, China, and Macao. Due to the limitations of the mode of transmission, the speed of its transmission and the range of people affected are far from the same as the new crown epidemic. In other words, monkeypox outbreaks will not cause a large-scale epidemic on the mainland.

A warning

At present, the transmission of monkeypox virus is one of the focuses of attention of all parties.

On July 24, local time, Dr. Anne Limoin, a professor of epidemiology at the Fielding School of Public Health at the University of California, Los Angeles, warned that the monkeypox virus has "multiple transmission mechanisms."

Dr. Rimoin said on fox News' livestream that what is now understood is that the virus is spreading rapidly through human-to-human transmission and that the virus can spread in a number of different ways. It can be transmitted through contaminants, including materials such as bed sheets, clothing, and towels that can carry the virus.

It further explained that the current virus is mainly transmitted through human-to-human contact, but the lesion may come from the patient's bed sheets, clothes, etc., and others will also be infected after contact.

It should be noted that Dr. Rimoin has been studying monkeypox virus in the Democratic Republic of the Congo for 20 years, and the transmission mechanism is one of the focuses of his research. Therefore, her warning instantly aroused the attention of the market.

WHO data also show that while monkeypox cases are mostly male-male sex, they also include a small number of children with no known epidemiological link to the case. In addition, in West and Central Africa, where cases have been frequent in the past, the number of cases has increased significantly, with the majority of women and children.

Recently, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced that U.S. health officials have confirmed that 2 children are infected with monkeypox virus, most likely due to the spread of monkeypox virus among family members.

It is worth being alarmed that monkeypox viruses have also been detected in wastewater in many parts of the United States. According to the website of the MIT Technology Review magazine on the 23rd, monkeypox virus has been detected in the wastewater of many places in California, USA.

Infectious disease experts in the United States are concerned that the spread of monkeypox viruses is accelerating in the United States, and even the possibility of community cluster transmission cannot be ruled out, and the transmission mechanism may have changed. It has also raised concerns about the wider spread of the monkeypox virus.

The market is restless

In the face of this wave of monkeypox epidemic, the capital market has also been restless again.

On July 25, after the opening of A shares, monkeypox concept stocks collectively strengthened significantly. As of the close of the day, the Wind monkeypox index rose by more than 5%, of which Huaren Pharmaceutical and Bohui Innovation both gained 20cm up and down board, Zhijiang Biology and West Point Pharmaceutical rose by more than 14%, and Asia-Pacific Pharmaceutical rose by more than 9% and Youningwei rose by more than 9%.

On the evening of the 25th, Zhijiang Bio issued a risk warning announcement, and at present, there is no outbreak of monkeypox in China, and there is great uncertainty in the domestic market demand. In addition to the company's monkeypox products obtained EU CE certification, there are also other companies' monkeypox products certified to supply the market, even if the market demand increases in the future, the company may face the market competition risk of similar products.

In addition, after the opening of the US stock market overnight, monkeypox concept stocks also rose sharply, as of the close of the day, Tonix Pharmaceutical Holdings soared more than 45% in a single day, SIGA Technology also soared by more than 29%, Chimerix intraday highest gain of more than 24%, Inovio Pharmaceutical rose more than 5%.

In fact, perhaps the biggest "winner" of this wave of monkeypox is Bavarian Nordic, a danish-based vaccine manufacturer.

On July 25, local time, Bavarian Nordic announced on its official website that the European Commission has expanded the scope of the company's smallpox vaccine Imvanex to approve its use in response to the monkeypox epidemic.

Previously, the United States and Canada had approved the smallpox vaccine Impvanex of Bavaria Nordic, and the procurement volume was very large. In June, the United States had already purchased 500,000 doses from Bavarian Nordics, and in early July, it added 2.5 million doses.

Boosted by strong demand for vaccines, Bavaria Nordic's share price has soared, with a cumulative increase of more than 155% since May 1.

According to reports, the third-generation vaccine developed by Bavaria Nordic Company is called Imvanex in Europe (Jynneos in the United States, Imvamune in Canada), which is a smallpox vaccine for protecting adults, because monkeypox and smallpox belong to the same genus of pox virus family, and smallpox vaccine can also protect people from monkeypox.

White House officials say the U.S. government's current goal is to rely on increased testing and vaccinations to eventually eliminate monkeypox. Up to 80,000 monkeypox infection tests can be performed in the United States per week and more than 300,000 vaccines have been distributed.

Therefore, the market expects that as the monkeypox epidemic in Europe and the United States continues to spread, the shipment of vaccines in Bavaria nor Northern Europe may further increase.
