Launching the first fine jewelry collection, Rubeus Imperial Alexandrite, it features Alexandrite as the theme, with pink spinel and green zoiselle accentuated by its unique color-changing effect.
Alexandrite was first discovered in the Ural Mountains of Russia, and its unique red-green discoloration corresponds to the color of the flag of the Russian Empire, and was dedicated to Alexander II, who had not yet ascended the throne at that time, and named it Alexanderrite. Alexandrite is a rare variety of chrysoberyl that has a discoloration effect due to its chromium (Cr), which is red under tungsten lamps and green in daylight. This unique ability to change tones is known as the "alexandrite effect," which is why alexandrite is often described as "emerald by day and ruby by night."
Alexandrite has long been one of the ten rarest gemstones in the world and is a subject of great interest to collectors. Alexandrites over 10 carats are very rare, but faceted alexandrites weighing 8.72 to 69.37 carats have been used in the Imperial Alexandrite Collection – a feat never achieved before.
The most notable of these is undoubtedly the Imperial Platinum Necklace, a 69.37 ct alexandrite that Gübelin identified as produced in Russia and is said to be the largest discovered to date – the previous record was held by the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, D.C. 66 ct. Hidden in a detachable structure, this necklace can be easily converted into a simple version of the necklace or brooch to wear, giving the 69.37ct center stone a richer matching possibility, full of energy and power.
