Among the generals of the Kuomintang, Zhang Lingfu was indeed a relatively unique figure. He died in the Battle of Menglianggu at the age of 44, and was already a lieutenant general at the time of his death, which was not a low rank, but it was slightly inferior to a group of famous anti-Japanese generals in the Kuomintang.
From the perspective of personality, Zhang Lingfu is violent and brave, amorous and yin, and when these extreme traits appear in a person at the same time, they make him a complex contradiction, especially when reflected in feelings, Zhang Lingfu's extremely complex personality is vividly reflected. He experienced four relationships in his life, all showing his cold and amorous side, especially in his second marriage, Zhang Lingfu actually shot his wife Wu Hailan, breaking into a catastrophe and causing public anger.
Zhang Lingfu was originally named Zhang Zhonglin, born in 1903 in Chang'an County, Shaanxi Province, a rich peasant family, from a young age to enter the hall to receive a good education, in 1921, Zhang Lingfu was admitted to Chang'an Middle School, during which he was still in middle school, he obeyed the orders of his parents, took his first wife Xing Fengying, after graduating in 1923, Zhang Lingfu was admitted to the History Department of Peking University with excellent results, during the Peking University, due to family changes, unable to afford the school fees and chose to withdraw.
In 1926, after dropping out of school, Zhang Lingfu joined Hu Jingyi's Kuomintang Second Army Officer Training Camp in Yu, during which time he became acquainted with Yu Youren and, on his recommendation, was admitted to the fourth phase of the Whampoa Military Academy. Since then, Zhang Lingfu has begun to join the military life.
During his studies at the Whampoa Military Academy, Zhang Lingfu's marriage to his wife Xing Fengying had long since ceased to exist in name only, and the two were separated, with Xing Fengying taking care of the elderly in his hometown and Zhang Lingfu studying at the Whampoa Military Academy in Guangzhou.
After graduating from the military academy, Zhang Lingfu participated in the Northern Expedition with the army, by which time he had been promoted to platoon leader, and after the end of the Northern Expedition, Zhang Lingfu was ordered to be transferred to the First Division of the National Revolutionary Army and again promoted to regimental commander.
In 1933, Zhang Lingfu led his troops to engage the Fourth Front Army of the Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army in Sichuan, during which time, under the introduction of friends, he met his second wife, Wu Hailan.
Wu Hailan was born in a well-to-do family in Guangyuan County, Sichuan Province, his father was a well-known local coppersmith, and Wu Hailan himself had also attended school, at that time, there were very few educated women in this small county, so Wu Hailan was also more eye-catching in the local area, and his vision was very high.
Under the introduction of friends, Wu Hailan and Zhang Lingfu met and fell in love with him at first sight, in Wu Hailan's eyes, Zhang Lingfu was different from other men in the county, he was handsome, a military uniform was even more majestic, although he said little, but acted very boldly. The cheerful and enthusiastic Wu Hailan did not reject the taciturn Zhang Lingfu at all, but felt that the two personalities could just complement each other.
In this way, Zhang Lingfu, who has always been fierce, has not delayed, as the saying goes, fighting a war pays attention to a quick battle, for him, marriage is also the same, not to mention, as a soldier, the army may be ordered to move at any time, which will have so much time to slowly cultivate feelings. Soon after, Zhang Lingfu successfully proposed to Wu Hailan, and the two married in Guangyuan, Sichuan.
After marriage, the two lived a sweet life, the family was always full of joy and laughter, and although Wu Hailan was from Sichuan, she was very skilled in making noodles, often cooking for Zhang Lingfu, and soon after, the daughter of the two, Zhang Qingfang, was born.
In 1934, Zhang Lingfu was ordered to transfer to Shaanxi to encircle and suppress the Red Army, and Wu Hailan also followed her husband to Xi'an, but not long after, Zhang Lingfu's troops opened up Hanzhong again, and in desperation, the two newlyweds had to live separately, but fortunately, Hanzhong and Xi'an were not far away, Zhang Lingfu could often go home, but even so, there was still a gap between the two.
Zhang Lingfu said one thing and was short-tempered in the army, and severely punished those who violated his principles, and in life, he also brought his style in the army home, and Wu Hailan's death was a victim of his violent personality.
One day, after returning to the camp after visiting his relatives with Zhang Lingfu, Zhang Lingfu asked him about his wife's situation, and when this comrade-in-arms saw his anxious look, he quipped: "Oh, brother, you can't be angry when you say it, your wife, once I saw her dressed up in a fancy way, and there was a young man in a suit and leather shoes next to her, the two were very affectionate, if you are not at ease, you should hurry back to Xi'an to have a look." ”
Originally, I just wanted to make a joke, but I didn't expect that Zhang Lingfu was serious, sullen and unhappy for several days, his temper became more and more grumpy, who scolded whom, in his eyes, his wife's "cheating" was unforgivable, it was an unacceptable shame, so his heart gradually sprouted a killing intention.
Later, he asked the army for leave again on the grounds of visiting relatives, returned home with a pistol, and Wu Hailan, who had not seen her husband for a long time, seemed very happy, asked about her husband's physical condition, and asked him about his warmth, and the two also went out to watch the drama together, however, the tragedy occurred in this seemingly beautiful and harmonious atmosphere. One day, he said to his wife, "I haven't eaten dumplings for a long time, so wrap a dumpling for me." ”
Wu Hailan heard that her husband wanted to eat dumplings, immediately went to the market to buy pork, sent home and then quickly took the sickle to his own vegetable field to cut leeks, unexpectedly, Zhang Lingfu followed her all the way to the vegetable field, and when his wife just squatted down to prepare to cut leeks, Zhang Lingfu immediately pulled out a pistol and fired a shot at the back of her head, Wu Hailan fell to the ground in response, bleeding non-stop, and thus ended his short life.
However, there is another theory about "Zhang Lingfu's ancient city killing his wife", Liu Guangyu, who served under Zhang Lingfu, and Zhang Lingfu's later wife Wang Yuling recalled that at that time, it was because Zhang Lingfu discovered that his wife had secretly stolen military documents, and she could not give a reasonable explanation, Zhang Lingfu's unit was fighting fiercely with the Red Army, Xi'an also had a communist underground activity organization, Zhang Lingfu was suspicious, he suspected that his wife might be involved with the Communist Party, but because there was no evidence, he did not dare to speak out. He had to interrogate his wife privately, but unexpectedly, Wu Hailan always kept silent, which angered him, making him more and more convinced that his wife had done something ulterior behind his back, so he shot her, and Wu Hailan fell under Zhang Lingfu's gun.
Afterwards, people scolded him one after another about what had happened, and Zhang Lingfu was worried that his wife was suspected of implicating himself in the whole world, so he always said that it was a emotional entanglement. Whatever exactly made Zhang Lingfu kill his wife, it is certain that there is no definite evidence of his suspicion of his wife.
After Wu Hailan was shot and killed, the news gradually spread to Guangyuan, Sichuan, and after Wu Hailan's brother Wu Zhengyou learned the truth about his sister's death, he went to the Women's Association in Xi'an to complain about it. Zhang Lingfu graduated from the Whampoa Military Academy and served in Chiang Kai-shek's First Army, which was deeply valued.
At that time, China's feminist movement was in the ascendant, Zhang Xueliang's wife Yu Fengzhi was one of the leaders, it just so happened that when she arrived in Xi'an, the Xi'an Women's Association handed over Wu Zhengyou's letter of accusation, yu Fengzhi read the letter, asked Zhang Xueliang to investigate, but Zhang Xueliang put his hands together and resigned on the grounds that "the officers of the Central Army are not under my control."
Yu Fengzhi saw that Zhang Xueliang did not care, so she returned to Nanjing and found Song Meiling to talk about this matter and asked her to come forward to solve it, Song Meiling thought for a moment and then informed Chiang Kai-shek of the matter, and Chiang Kai-shek heard that his Huangpu protégé provoked public anger and shot his wife unreasonably.
Zhang Lingfu learned that he could not escape the disaster, and when he arrived in Nanjing, he went to the Military Justice Department and was later sentenced to death, however, Zhang Lingfu contracted malaria in prison and gradually recovered after treatment, which also made him rekindle his hopes in life and submitted a complaint to the military court. Sure enough, Chiang Kai-shek, who had always favored the Huangpu students, also took advantage of this appeal to imprison him in a "model prison" and sentenced him to ten years in prison.
In prison, Zhang Lingfu lived quite comfortably, in addition to not being able to go out, every day he ate and slept in prison to practice writing.
After the outbreak of the National War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, Zhang Lingfu finally waited for the opportunity to go out of the mountains, the Kuomintang announced the cessation of the civil war to unite against Japan, just when the military was employing people, the Kuomintang specially released a number of generals, Zhang Lingfu was released at this time, after his release from prison, Zhang Lingfu went to the anti-Japanese front and made no small contribution on the anti-Japanese battlefield.
In May 1947, Zhang Lingfu, who was anxious to make meritorious contributions, led his army to go deep into Menglianggu alone in an attempt to launch an offensive against the People's Liberation Army, but unexpectedly, the East China Field Army immediately launched a general offensive after adjusting its deployment, and on the 16th, Zhang Lingfu's troops were completely annihilated, and he himself was killed in this battle.
After Zhang Lingfu's death, his then-wife Wang Yuling was also widowed, and after the end of the Liberation War, she followed the Kuomintang to Taiwan, as Zhang Lingfu's widow, she should have been given preferential treatment, but because the Kuomintang was unable to take care of herself at that time, she could only receive a meager ration to live, and later, Wang Yuling decided to leave Taiwan, went to the United States and gradually settled here.
In 1973, Premier Zhou accidentally learned of Wang Yuling's news, so he entrusted relevant personnel to invite her, hoping that she could fall back to the roots, and Premier Zhou's invitation was undoubtedly a charcoal in the snow for Wang Yuling, who lived in a foreign country.
In September, Wang Yuling returned to the motherland that had been separated for many years and was received by Premier Zhou, who, after seeing her, also apologetically said: "Zhang Lingfu is an excellent general, as his teacher, I did not win him over, it was I who did not do a good job." As soon as Premier Zhou's voice fell, he saw that Wang Yuling had long since stopped crying.
In 2005, on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the victory in the War of Resistance Against Japan, Zhang Lingfu's eldest son, Zhang Juli, received an anti-Japanese commemorative medal issued by the CPC Central Committee, the Central Military Commission and the State Council for his father.
Although Zhang Lingfu is full of controversy, it is undeniable that he fought for the country and the nation in the War of Resistance Against Japan, and was also an anti-Japanese fighter, and this merit cannot be erased.
