A statement from Scotland's National Gallery said the painting, hidden on the back of The Head of a Peasant Woman, was covered in cardboard and glue. The Head of the Peasant Woman was created in 1885, when Van Gogh was living in a small town in the south of the Netherlands, and the painting was supposed to have been created while he was living in the south of the Netherlands.

This layer of cardboard and glue is thought to have been affixed in the early 20th century. Currently, experts at the agency are working on how to remove the glue and cardboard behind "The Peasant Woman's Head" without damaging it, because only actually seeing the painting can prove its authenticity.

Lesley Stevenson, administrator of scotland's National Gallery, discovered a self-portrait of Van Gogh on the canvas of The Peasant Woman's Head by X-ray.

Van Gogh was known for reusing canvases, and he often created on the reverse side of the canvas to save money. Because I can't afford to hire models, I often practice painting myself in the mirror. Most of Van Gogh's self-portraits were painted during his stay in Paris, from "Self-Portrait in a Dark Felt Hat", painted in Paris in early 1886, to the last self-portrait painted before his death in 1890. In addition to this "hidden version", Van Gogh painted a total of 35 self-portraits in his lifetime.
