Named because it is native to Maine, USA, the Maine cat is the first naturally occurring long-haired cat breed in North America, forming a relatively stable breed around the middle of the 18th century. The Maine cat is strong, thickly coated, and resembles the Siberian forest cat, and is a large breed of cats.
A 6-year-old Maine cat named Lotus lives with its owner in Jämtland, Sweden, and the lotus weighs a staggering 22 pounds (10 kilograms). The Maine cat is a large cat species, but the lotus is a little larger than the average cat.
It takes its name from its furry ears, which look like a lynx. Lotus means "lynx" in Swedish.
