Malaysian plover (Charadrius peronii)

The Malay Plover is a small (14–16 cm) black , brown and white plover in the family Ploveridae. It is found on the beaches and mudflats of the Malay Peninsula, Indochina, the Philippines, Sulawesi and the Sunda Islands, often in pairs, feeding on invertebrates on beaches and mudflats. The Malay Plover is a near-threatened bird species with a global population of 6,700-17,000 birds. Distribution in the Field Manual of Chinese Birds: Recorded in China, but no exact location (de Schauensee, 1984). This species occurs on many coral islands in the Spratly Islands of China. There are no records of actual Malay Plover in China, so the China Bird Watching Annual Report - List of Chinese Birds excludes Malay Plover. The Malay Plover is closer to the Ring-necked Plover, which is distinguished by the fact that it usually has a complete white collar ring and the ear spots are not connected to the eyeliner. The last 2 figures show the ring-necked plover male and female birds.
