The grey-backed swallowtail is a black-and-white swallowtail. The top of the head and back are grey. Female and male adult birds have about the same plumage color.
It inhabits mountain forests at altitudes of 400–1800 m and is common in rocky streams. It is found in the Himalayas to southern China and Indochina.
