UNSW was established in Sydney in 1949 under the New South Wales House of Parliament Act, but its features and philosophy date back to the establishment of the Sydney Institute of Mechanics in 1843 and the establishment of the Sydney Institute of Technology in 1878.
The university's predecessor was the University of New South Wales Technology.
The new university's focus is on helping Australia keep up with the challenges associated with the Second World War, a requirement recognised by the NSW Government when it established the university.
Its core focus is on teaching and research in science and technology, but its curriculum also includes humanities and business components.
Initially, the school had only 117 students, 7 courses, and 3 faculty members.
At the heart of the university's first 20 years was the dynamic authoritarian administration of the first Chancellor, Sir Philip Baxter.
The new university soon established colleges in Newcastle (1951) and Wollongong (1961), eventually becoming independent universities.
In 1958, the university was renamed the University of New South Wales and in 1960 expanded its academic, student base and character to form the Faculty of Letters, followed by the Faculty of Medicine in 1960 and the Faculty of Law in 1971.
In 1969, the new Chancellor, Sir Rupert Myers, brought a new management style to the growing student population and the need for a change in the style of the university.
By the 1980s, universities were already among the best in Australia.
The university began enrolling international students in 1951, and by 2000, about 6,000 of the 31,000 students were international students, most of them from Asia.
