author:Candle Dragon 2020

The first generation: Guangdong Chaozhou people - Qiu Chunsheng

During the Guangxu dynasty of the Qing Dynasty (1860s), a 12-year-old boy named Qiu Chunsheng in Taxia Village, Fengshun County, Meizhou, Guangdong Province, accompanied his parents to Thailand as a helper. After coming to Bangkok, Thailand, Qiu Shengchun worked silently and painstakingly, and a few years later, from a displaced person with no standing place, he became a tax merchant in a seaport in Thailand, completing the first accumulation of wealth in his life. In order to integrate into the local area, Cho Sheng Chun married a Thai woman, had 6 children, and moved to Chiang Mai in 1908.

Second generation: Changed surname to Shinawatra

Around 1932, Qiu Chunsheng's eldest son, Mr. and Mrs. Qiu Chang, opened a factory to import silkworm cocoons from China, Iran and Myanmar to process into silk, and to make ready-to-wear clothes with reference to popular styles in Bangkok. The Qiu family's products are all the rage and are even favored by the Bangkok royal family. Qiu Chunsheng was Thaksin's grandfather.

In ancient times, Thais had only first names and no surnames, but with the rapid development of the modern population, Thai surnames have been reformed. According to Thai law, foreigners who have lived in Thailand for three generations can apply for a Thai surname, which is undoubtedly a good news for Qiu Chang, who has a successful career and aspires to participate in Thai politics. In 1938, Chu Chang chose the Thai surname "Shinawatra", which means "to do good things according to the rules". From this time on, the Shinawatra family and other business families in Chiang Mai were widely married. The married family involved milling, shipping, retail, and so on. By 1949, the year Thaksin Shinawatra was born, Shinawatra was already one of Chiang Mai's largest families.

In Thaksin's paternal generation, the patriarch, Roth Sivana, entered the Chiang Mai House Council in 1967, became president of the chamber the following year, and was elected to the Thai Parliament in the third year. Subsequently, he participated in the formation of the Independence Party and became a prominent figure in Thai politics in the 1970s.

Because Rott Sivana was too addicted to politics, he abandoned the family business. This was also the main reason why Thaksin later said that his family was poor when he was a teenager. In 1950, Thaksin's father, Lot, took over the family business, and Thaksin helped out in the shop from an early age. In the 1960s, Lot also embarked on the road to politics. In 1967, he was elected to the Chiang Mai House, became president of parliament the following year, and was elected to Parliament two years later.
