The Parthenon is an old temple in the Greek Acropolis dedicated to the goddess Athena, whom the Athenian people considered to be their patron saint. The Parthenon was built on the foundations of an older Temple of Athena, which was demolished in 480 BC during the Persian invasion.

In 447 BC, work began on the Parthenon, at the height of the power of the Delian Confederacy. The Parthenon was completed in 438 BC as the treasury of the then-Delian Confederacy, which later established the Athenian Empire. Like most Greek temples, the Parthenon played a practical role as the city's treasury. Its decorative sculptures are considered the highlights of Greek art. The Parthenon is considered an eternal symbol of ancient Greek, democratic and Western civilization, and is one of the greatest cultural monuments in the world. For the Athenians who built it, the Parthenon and other pericles monuments of the Acropolis symbolize the victory of the Greeks over the Persian invaders, as well as the thanksgiving to the gods for their victory. The Parthenon was also once called the "Hundred Steps Temple" by some because of its exquisite proportions.

In the 5th century AD, the Parthenon was converted into a temple, originally dedicated to Hagia Sophia and later to the Virgin Mary. During Turkish rule, it became a mosque. In 1687, during morosini's siege of the Acropolis, the Parthenon was destroyed by a Venetian bomb and most of the temple collapsed. At the beginning of the 19th century, Lord Elgin's plundering of his sculptural ornaments also caused serious damage to it, resulting in most of the sculptures still in the British Museum today.

In 1896-1900, the first conservation and restoration work was carried out on the first Parthenon, and the second was carried out in 1922-1933. In cooperation with the Office of the Restoration of the Acropolis monuments and the Bureau of Prehistory and Classical Antiquities, the preservation and restoration of the Parthenon has continued to this day under the supervision of the Acropolis Committee for the Preservation of Monuments.

The Parthenon is one of the most recognizable monuments in the world. According to the mainstream view, the monument was first noted by modern people during the European Enlightenment in the 18th century, and it was revered as a symbol of universal and enduring values such as excellence, democracy, and art. In Greece, it also has a special place in national sentiments, both in the monument itself and in the sculptures that were removed from it and exhibited at the British Museum. According to the UNESCO World Heritage Centre, the Parthenon has been on the World Heritage List since 11 September 1987 as part of a broader monumental complex. However, this is not an official addition of the Parthenon to a list as part of its cultural heritage. As a material project, it is the most reliable testimony of a technological and avant-garde aesthetic civilization that has had a major impact on the development of the modern Western world.
